Chapter 21 - The Unseen Invitation

The frost on the windowpanes traced intricate, fern-like patterns that caught the sharp January sunlight, turning our living room into a landscape of glittering crystal. Two months had passed since Chloe’s brief visit, and the rhythms of our household had settled into a steady, unbreakable cadence. Leo was deep into his fourth-grade science fair project, turning our basement workbench into a chaotic laboratory of baking-soda volcanoes and copper wiring, while Toby and Sam spent their afternoons waging epic snow-fort wars across the front lawn.

James was at the kitchen counter, balancing our quarterly accounts with a cup of black coffee steaming beside his elbow, when the mail carrier dropped a heavy, cream-colored parcel through the brass slot in our front door.

It didn't make the familiar hollow thud of bills or circulars; it landed with a dense, muffled weight that made James look up from his ledger.

He walked down the hallway, picked up the thick envelope, and turned it over. There was no return address, but stamped in deep crimson wax across the back flap was an emblem I hadn't seen since the federal raid: a stylized double helix entwined with an olive branch—the crest of the St. Jude Medical Foundation, the parent organization that had funded Doctor Evans’s suburban clinic before the federal crackdown.

"James?" I called out from the kitchen, wiping flour from my hands onto my apron as I walked into the hallway. "What is it?"

"I don't know," he murmured, using his thumb to break the brittle crimson seal. "The foundation was dissolved by the federal court six weeks ago. Every asset was supposed to be frozen or transferred to the state health board."

He pulled out a heavy parchment card, embossed with crisp black lettering, and a folded set of architectural blueprints.

To Mr. and Mrs. James Miller, As part of the federal restitution settlement regarding the restructuring of the regional genetic trust, you have been named principal executors of the Legacy Endowment Fund. A hearing will be held this coming Tuesday at ten o’clock in the chambers of Federal Judge Arthur Vance—no relation to the former agent—to formalize the transfer of the main facility property in downtown Boston.

I stared at the paper, the room suddenly feeling smaller, the ghost of Doctor Evans’s cold smile flashing unbidden across my memory. "An endowment fund? They want us to take over the building where they tried to tear our family apart?"

"Not just the building," James said, unfolding the blueprints across the hallway table. "Look at the schematics, Clara. This isn't a medical facility anymore. It’s an independent adoption and family reunification center, endowed with the seized assets of the clinic's offshore accounts. They're handing us the keys to the entire network."
