The clock on the mantel ticked softly, counting down the final hours of the year. Outside, the snow continued to fall in heavy, silent flakes, burying the tracks of the past and covering the world in a clean, blank slate.

I looked around the living room—at the framed photographs of Leo, Toby, and Sam lining the mantel, at the small pink quilt draped over the rocking chair where Lily was finally drifting off to sleep, and at the strong, steady hand of the man who had risked everything to keep our family whole.
