CHAPTER 1 — The Birthday Nobody Would Ever Forget

The laughter stopped.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

One second...

Crystal glasses clinked.

Children ran through the enormous backyard chasing balloons.

Music drifted from hidden speakers around the swimming pool.

The next...

Complete silence swallowed every sound.

It all began with a seven-year-old boy holding a slice of chocolate cake.

"Mom?"

Little Noah Carter looked up at the giant family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

He frowned.

Then innocently asked,

"Why is Daddy in that picture if he's not my real daddy?"

The knife Sarah Carter was using to cut the birthday cake slipped from her hand.

Clang.

It hit the marble floor so loudly that every guest turned toward her.

"What... did you just say?"

Sarah whispered.

Noah shrugged.

"The man with the blue eyes."

He pointed toward her husband.

Michael Carter.

One of Boston's most respected pediatric surgeons.

The man everyone believed had raised Noah since birth.

"Daddy says Grandpa told him never to tell anyone."

Sarah's face drained of color.

Michael stood frozen.

His smile disappeared.

Across the room...

Grandfather Richard slowly lowered his wine glass.

His hand was shaking.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Then Noah added another sentence.

"The other daddy cried when he saw me last week."

Someone dropped a champagne flute.

It shattered across the floor.

"What other daddy?"

Sarah demanded.

The boy blinked innocently.

"The nice man at the park."

"He hugged me when nobody was looking."

"He said..."

Noah tried to remember.

"...he said he missed every birthday because Grandpa wouldn't let him come home."

Richard suddenly stood.

"That's enough."

His voice thundered through the mansion.

"Noah doesn't know what he's is saying."

The little boy looked confused.

"But Grandpa..."

"You told me secrets are only bad if Mommy cries."

Every guest exchanged nervous glances.

Michael slowly turned toward Richard.

"What secret?"

Richard refused to answer.

Instead...

He grabbed his coat.

"I'm leaving."

"You stay right there."

Michael's voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that frightened everyone.

"For eighteen years..."

"I believed there wasn't a single secret in this family."

He looked directly at his father.

"But judging by Noah..."

"I've been living inside one."

Richard walked toward the front door.

Then Noah shouted one final sentence.

"The man at the park gave me this!"

From his tiny pocket...

He pulled out an old silver key.

Attached to it was a faded paper tag.

LOCKER 218

SOUTH STATION

OPEN WITH YOUR MOTHER

Sarah nearly collapsed.

Because she recognized that key immediately.

It had disappeared...

Eighteen years ago.

The same night...

May you like

The hospital told her...

Her fiancé had abandoned her forever.
