CHAPTER 4 — The Grandfather’s Last Lie

Richard Carter did not look afraid when the police arrived.

That was what scared Sarah most.

Even in handcuffs, even surrounded by flashing red and blue lights, even with his entire family staring at him like he had become a stranger...

Richard still looked powerful.

Cold.

Controlled.

Like a man who had already prepared for this moment.

As officers read him his rights, he turned his head slowly toward Sarah.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.”

Sarah stepped closer, her tears already dry on her cheeks.

“No,” she whispered. “I finally know what you did.”

Richard smiled faintly.

“You think Daniel is innocent?”

The room went still.

Daniel, standing beside Noah, lifted his eyes.

Michael’s jaw tightened.

Sarah’s heart sank.

Richard looked directly at her.

“You always were too emotional, Sarah. That’s why I had to make decisions for you.”

“Don’t you dare,” she said.

Richard ignored her.

“You want the truth? Fine. Ask Daniel what he was doing at Carter Medical the night your mother died.”

Sarah froze.

Her mother.

The one subject no one in the family ever discussed.

Eleanor Carter had died in a private hospital room eighteen years earlier after a sudden heart attack.

At least...

That was what Sarah had always been told.

Daniel’s face went pale.

Sarah turned slowly toward him.

“What is he talking about?”

Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Richard’s smile widened.

“There it is.”

The officers began leading him toward the door, but Richard shouted over his shoulder.

“You found one secret tonight.”

“But the one that destroyed this family...”

“Daniel helped bury it.”

Then he was gone.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Only Noah’s soft crying filled the room.

Sarah looked at Daniel.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with pain.

“I wish I could.”

Michael stepped between them.

“What happened at Carter Medical?”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“That night... I went there to see your mother.”

Sarah shook her head.

“My mother was already sick.”

“No,” Daniel said quietly. “She wasn’t.”

Sarah’s breath caught.

Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a folded photograph.

It showed Eleanor Carter standing outside Carter Medical.

Alive.

Healthy.

Holding a file folder.

On the back, written in blue ink, were four words:

SHE FOUND THE CHILD.

Sarah stared at the photo.

“What child?”

Daniel looked toward Noah.

May you like

Then back at Sarah.

“The child your father stole before he ever stole me.”
