CHAPTER 5 — The First Baby

The next morning, the Carter mansion became a crime scene.
Detectives searched Richard’s study.
They opened drawers, pulled books from shelves, photographed old records, and carried out sealed boxes that had not been touched in years.
But the biggest discovery was not in his office.
It was behind the fireplace.
Michael found it by accident.
A loose marble panel.
A hidden safe.
Inside were birth certificates.
Hospital bracelets.
Adoption papers.
And one tiny pink blanket wrapped around a silver locket.
Sarah lifted the locket with shaking fingers.
Inside was a baby photo.
A newborn girl.
On the back was a name.
Lily Anne Carter.
Sarah whispered, “Who is Lily?”
Michael looked at the documents.
Then his face changed.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
“Oh my God.”
Sarah grabbed the papers from him.
Her eyes moved across the words.
Birth mother: Eleanor Carter.
Father: Unknown.
Date of birth: eighteen years ago.
Sarah’s knees almost gave out.
“No.”
Daniel caught her before she fell.
Michael finished the sentence no one wanted to say.
“Sarah... you had a sister.”
The room spun around her.
A sister.
A baby sister.
A child her mother had given birth to in secret.
A child Richard had erased from the family.
Daniel explained what he knew.
Eleanor Carter had discovered Richard was using Carter Medical to illegally arrange private adoptions for wealthy families.
Babies from desperate mothers.
Babies from women who were lied to.
Babies who were told their children had died.
When Eleanor tried to expose him, Richard locked her inside a private wing of the hospital and had her declared unstable.
But she had already given birth to a daughter.
Lily.
Richard sold the baby to protect his empire.
Then he staged Eleanor’s death.
Sarah covered her mouth.
“My mother didn’t die of a heart attack?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“She died trying to escape.”
Sarah screamed.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
It was worse than that.
It was a broken sound from somewhere deep inside her.
Michael turned away, tears in his eyes.
For years, he had admired Richard Carter.
Called him father.
Trusted him.
But the man who raised him had built his entire life on stolen children and buried mothers.
Then Detective Harris entered the room holding a file.
“We found something else.”
Sarah wiped her face.
“What?”
The detective placed the file on the table.
“It looks like Lily Carter is alive.”
Sarah’s breath stopped.
“And according to this...”
Detective Harris looked at Michael.
“She’s been closer than you think.”
Michael frowned.
“What does that mean?”
The detective opened the file.
A recent photograph slid onto the table.
Sarah looked down.
And nearly stopped breathing.
Because she recognized the woman immediately.
She had seen her every week.
For years.
At Noah’s school.
Smiling at children.
Helping them cross the street.
Wearing a yellow safety vest.
Noah’s school crossing guard.
Her name was Grace Miller.
But according to Richard’s hidden file...
May you like
Her real name was Lily Carter.
Sarah’s stolen sister.
