CHAPTER 7 — The Recording Richard Never Wanted Anyone To Hear

Richard Carter smiled as the steel prison door slammed shut.
The guards thought he had lost everything.
His freedom.
His fortune.
His reputation.
They were wrong.
Because Richard knew something no one else did.
The most dangerous secret...
Had never been written on paper.
It had been recorded.
Back at the Carter mansion...
Sarah couldn't sleep.
The will her mother had left behind lay open across the dining table.
Every page confirmed the same horrifying truth.
Everything Eleanor Carter had owned...
Every share of Carter Medical...
Every hidden investment...
Every piece of land...
Belonged equally to Sarah and Lily.
Richard had forged documents for nearly two decades to steal it all.
Michael closed the final folder.
"This alone could send him to prison for the rest of his life."
Daniel wasn't listening.
He kept staring at Eleanor's handwriting.
Something bothered him.
Then suddenly...
He froze.
"No..."
Sarah looked up.
"What is it?"
Daniel pointed to a tiny sentence written beneath Eleanor's signature.
It wasn't part of the will.
It looked like a note scribbled in panic.
'Listen before believing anyone.'
Listen.
Not read.
Daniel immediately stood.
"The tape."
Sarah frowned.
"We already watched it."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"My message was only on one side."
"The tape has another recording."
Thirty minutes later...
An old VHS player borrowed from a neighbor hummed quietly inside the living room.
Sarah pressed PLAY.
Static.
Nothing.
For almost twenty seconds...
Only white noise.
Then...
A woman's frightened voice.
Eleanor.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...Richard has already failed."
Sarah covered her mouth.
Her mother's voice.
Alive again after eighteen years.
Eleanor spoke quickly.
As though someone could interrupt her at any second.
"Richard didn't steal one baby."
"He stole many."
"He built Carter Medical into the country's largest private adoption network..."
"...by selling children whose parents believed they were dead."
Michael's face turned white.
"No..."
Eleanor continued.
"I copied every record."
"They're hidden where Richard would never think to look."
Daniel leaned closer.
"Where?"
Static interrupted the recording.
The picture flickered violently.
Then Eleanor whispered six words.
"Ask Noah about the blue bird."
The tape ended.
Silence.
Everyone stared at one another.
Sarah blinked.
"What does that even mean?"
Daniel suddenly looked upstairs.
"Noah."
The next morning...
Sarah sat beside Noah while he colored dinosaurs at the kitchen table.
She smiled gently.
"Sweetheart..."
"Do you know anything about a blue bird?"
Noah didn't even look surprised.
"Oh."
"You mean Grandma's bird?"
Every adult froze.
Sarah whispered,
"What bird?"
Noah pointed toward the backyard.
"The wooden one."
"She told me never to let Grandpa touch it."
Daniel and Michael looked at each other.
"There wasn't any wooden bird in the yard."
"There is now," Noah answered.
"I buried it."
Sarah felt goosebumps spread across her arms.
"You... buried it?"
The little boy nodded proudly.
"Grandma said it was treasure."
"I hid it so the bad man couldn't find it."
"When did Grandma tell you that?"
Noah smiled innocently.
"In my dream."
Nobody laughed.
Because Noah described Eleanor's necklace...
The exact dress she wore the day she died...
And the lullaby only Sarah remembered.
Things no seven-year-old should have known.
Within minutes...
The entire family was digging beneath the old oak tree Noah pointed toward.
Three feet down...
The shovel struck wood.
Daniel carefully lifted out a weathered blue wooden bird.
Its paint had faded.
One wing was cracked.
But inside...
Hidden beneath a tiny sliding panel...
Was a microcassette.
Along with a brass key.
And one folded note.
Sarah unfolded it with trembling hands.
Only one sentence was written.
"If Richard is still alive... don't trust the police chief."
Michael stared at the note.
His blood ran cold.
"The police chief..."
"He was Richard's best friend for thirty years."
Before anyone could speak...
The front gate exploded inward.
Two black SUVs roared onto the property.
Masked men poured out carrying weapons.
One shouted across the lawn.
"Give us the cassette!"
Daniel immediately grabbed Noah.
Michael pushed Sarah and Lily behind the stone fountain.
Grace dialed 911 with shaking hands.
But the call never connected.
No signal.
The masked leader smiled.
"You really think Richard didn't prepare for this?"
He slowly removed his mask.
Sarah gasped.
It wasn't a stranger.
It was...
Detective Harris.
The same detective who had promised to protect them.
He raised his weapon.
"I'm sorry."
"But some secrets..."
May you like
"Were never supposed to survive."
