Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Twist and Shocking Conclusion

Sarah gasped, dropping the tea tray. The porcelain shattered across the hardwood floor.

"Vincent?!" Sarah shrieked, instantly pulling Lily behind her. "What are you doing?!"

Adrian didn't panic. His expression turned to pure ice.

"It was you," Adrian said quietly, the realization settling into his mind like a lead weight. "You were the mole. You leaked my location to Volkov on Mulberry Street. You leaked the location of Sarah’s apartment."

Vincent sighed softly, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. "It wasn't personal, Adrian. It never was."

"Why?" Adrian asked, his voice dead calm. "Eleven years, Vincent. You took a bullet for me in Chicago. I trusted you with my life. I trusted you with my daughter's life!"

"And that was your mistake!" Vincent snapped, his emotionless mask cracking into bitter anger. "You soft-hearted fool! For ten years, you were the most feared man on the East Coast. We built an empire! We controlled everything! And then... a little girl is born, and suddenly the great Don Moretti wants to play house?!"

Vincent took a step closer, his knuckles white on the gun grip.

"Volkov didn't ambush you at Mulberry Street to kill you, Adrian," Vincent revealed, dropping a bombshell that made Adrian's blood run cold. "I arranged that meeting! Volkov and I were partners. We agreed to eliminate you, split the Moretti assets, and take over the city together. But Volkov got greedy. He wanted your daughter killed too. That wasn't part of my deal."

Adrian’s eyes widened. "You... you brought Volkov to the apartment?"

"I needed Volkov to finish you off because your heart was already failing!" Vincent yelled. "When you killed Volkov in that apartment, you ruined the plan! But it doesn't matter now. The paperwork you were about to sign transfers all your wealth to my private accounts. Volkov is dead. You are a dying man with a broken heart. And I am going to inherit New York."

"Vincent, please!" Sarah sobbed, begging from behind the desk. "Take the money! Just let us leave! We'll never come back!"

"I can't leave witnesses, Sarah," Vincent said coldly, shifting his sight slightly toward Sarah and Lily. "Especially not the girl who made the great Adrian Moretti soft."

Lily peeked out from behind Sarah’s skirt. She looked at Vincent—the man who had brought her teddy bears, the man who had guarded her door—and her tiny voice trembled.

"Uncle Vincent... why are you pointing that at my daddy?"

Vincent’s hand trembled slightly for a microsecond at the sound of her voice.

And that microsecond was all Adrian Moretti needed.

Adrian didn't draw a gun. Instead, he slammed his heavy hand down onto the desk’s secret security button—a failsafe built into the custom-made furniture.

CLICK!

An ultra-high-frequency acoustic pulse, designed to disorient attackers, erupted from concealed speakers in the sunroom’s ceiling.

A violent, ear-splitting screech filled the room.

Vincent cried out in agony, dropping his hands to cover his ears as his balance shattered.

Adrian moved with lightning speed. He closed the distance in two strides, grabbing Vincent’s gun hand and twisting his wrist sharply upward.

CRACK!

Vincent screamed as his wrist snapped. The silenced pistol dropped to the floor.

Adrian grabbed Vincent by his collar, driving him backward through the heavy glass sunroom doors. The glass shattered into thousands of sparkling pieces as both men tumbled out onto the stone terrace outside.

Vincent scrambled backward on the stone patio, bleeding from multiple glass cuts, staring up in utter terror at the man standing over him.

Adrian picked up the heavy metal patio chair, his face a mask of absolute vengeance.

"You thought loving my daughter made me soft, Vincent?" Adrian growled, his voice echoing over the Catskill mountains like thunder. "You thought my daughter was my weakness?"

Adrian threw the chair aside, stepping closer and grabbing Vincent by his throat, lifting the grown man off his feet with superhuman strength fueled by absolute parental fury.

"She isn't my weakness," Adrian whispered deathly into Vincent’s ear. "She is the reason I will never die."

With a brutal twist, Adrian threw Vincent over the stone terrace railing.

Vincent screamed as he plummeted fifty feet down into the jagged rocky ravine below, his body disappearing into the rushing river waters.

Silence returned to the compound.

Adrian stood at the edge of the terrace, his heavy breathing steadying. Inside his chest, the newly implanted pacemaker hummed smoothly, regulating his heart rate to a perfect, steady beat.

He turned around.

Sarah and Lily were standing at the shattered sunroom doorway. Lily was clutching her paper drawing tightly in her hand.

Adrian walked over to them. He knelt down on the stone floor, completely unbothered by the broken glass around them.

He held out his hand.

Lily stepped forward, a bright, triumphant smile on her face. She reached out and wrapped her small, warm fingers firmly around his.

"Daddy," she said softly. "Are we safe now?"

Adrian looked at his daughter, then up at Sarah, feeling a profound, unbreakable sense of peace wash over his soul for the very first time in his life.

"Yes, my sweet girl," Adrian smiled, squeezing her tiny hand tightly as he kissed her forehead. "We're going home."
