CHAPTER 1 – The Girl Nobody Waited For

Every afternoon at exactly 3:17 PM, the yellow school bus stopped at the corner of Maple Street.
Children ran into waiting arms.
Parents smiled.
Dogs barked.
Car doors opened.
But one little girl always stood alone.
Nine-year-old Lily Carter hugged her faded pink backpack against her chest and watched every family disappear.
She never cried.
Not anymore.
She simply whispered to herself, "Maybe tomorrow."
The old crossing guard, Mr. Harris, noticed.
Every day he asked, "Someone coming today, sweetheart?"
Every day she forced the same smile.
"They're just... busy."
But everyone knew the truth.
Her mother had disappeared three years earlier.
Her father, once a loving firefighter, had fallen into alcoholism after losing everything in a devastating house fire.
Sometimes he remembered to pick her up.
Most days...
He forgot.
One rainy afternoon the school secretary sighed.
"Lily, do you want us to call someone?"
She shook her head.
"Dad will come."
He never did.
Four hours later, the school principal quietly drove her home.
Inside the small house, empty beer bottles covered the kitchen floor.
Her father was asleep on the couch.
The principal covered Lily's eyes before she could see the worst of it.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Lily simply smiled.
"It's okay."
But that night...
She quietly opened an old notebook.
Across the first page she wrote:
"Dear Mom... I still believe you're coming back."
She folded the page carefully and placed it inside a tiny wooden box beneath her bed.
It was the first of many letters.
She never mailed a single one.
She believed that someday...
Somehow...
Her mother would read every word.
May you like
She had no idea...
Someone else already had.
