CHAPTER 7 – The Stranger at the Memorial

Five years passed.

The little girl who once waited alone at the bus stop was now fourteen.

Lily Carter had become the face of hope in her town.

Every year she visited the firefighters' memorial before sunrise, leaving a handwritten letter beneath the bronze statue.

No reporters.

No speeches.

Just one letter.

On the fifth anniversary, as she placed the envelope on the stone, she noticed someone already standing there.

An elderly man in a worn black coat.

He held an old firefighter's helmet against his chest.

His eyes filled with tears.

"You've grown so much," he whispered.

Lily frowned.

"Do... do I know you?"

The man smiled sadly.

"No."

"But I've known you since the day you were born."

Before Lily could ask another question, the man handed her a small leather journal.

"If you ever want to know who truly saved your family..."

"Read the last page."

Then he walked away.

By the time Lily looked up...

He had disappeared.

Inside the journal were names of firefighters.

Maps.

Old photographs.

And one shocking sentence written in fading ink.

"Daniel Carter was never supposed to survive that fire."

Lily's heart stopped.

If someone wanted her father dead...

May you like

Then the fire had never been random.

It had been an assassination.
