CHAPTER 4 – The Box That Was Never Meant to Be Opened

Life slowly returned to the Carter family.
Lily laughed again.
Her father, Daniel, celebrated six months of sobriety.
Her mother, Emily, never missed another afternoon at the bus stop.
Everyone believed the nightmare was finally over.
Until one rainy evening...
Margaret, the retired social worker who had reunited the family, arrived carrying a dusty cardboard box.
"I think this belongs to you."
Daniel frowned.
"What is it?"
"It was found in the abandoned fire station where the investigation began."
Inside were old newspaper clippings...
A melted firefighter's badge...
Several sealed evidence bags...
And one small cassette tape labeled:
"DO NOT DESTROY."
The room fell silent.
Daniel found an old tape recorder in the attic.
His hands trembled as he pressed PLAY.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A terrified man's voice.
"If anyone hears this... the fire wasn't an accident..."
Daniel's face turned pale.
The voice belonged to his former captain.
"...Someone locked the emergency exits from the outside."
Emily gasped.
The tape continued.
"I saw Councilman Richard Hayes leaving the warehouse minutes before the explosion... If anything happens to me, tell my family the truth."
The recording suddenly ended.
For years everyone believed the fire had been caused by faulty wiring.
Now...
Someone had murdered fourteen firefighters.
Including nearly Daniel himself.
Margaret whispered,
"They buried this evidence."
Daniel stared at Lily.
May you like
"The fire didn't destroy our family...
Someone did."
