CHAPTER 2 – The Secret Reader

Every Friday after Lily left for school, someone entered the old house.
Not to steal.
Not to hurt anyone.
Only to clean.
The mysterious visitor quietly washed dishes...
Picked up broken bottles...
Bought groceries...
Even left fresh flowers beside an old family photograph.
Lily thought angels existed.
Her father never noticed.
One Friday, the stranger heard soft crying coming from Lily's bedroom.
Curious, they discovered the tiny wooden box.
Inside...
Thirty-seven handwritten letters.
Each one began the same way.
"Dear Mom..."
The stranger sat on the floor reading every page.
One letter read:
"Dad forgot my birthday again today.
I told him the cake tasted wonderful...
Even though there wasn't one."
Another said:
"I learned how to braid my own hair because nobody else could."
Then came the final letter.
The ink was smeared by tears.
"Mom...
If you can't come back...
Could you at least send someone to love Dad again?
I think he's more broken than me."
The stranger couldn't stop crying.
No child should ever write words like those.
The next morning...
A small envelope appeared beneath Lily's pillow.
There was no name.
Only one sentence.
"Keep writing. Someone is listening."
Lily stared at the note in disbelief.
For the first time in years...
She smiled with genuine hope.
Across town...
The mysterious visitor made a life-changing phone call.
"I've found her."
There was a long silence.

Then a trembling voice answered...
"Is... is my daughter still alive?"
