CHAPTER 1 — THE KNOCK ON THE CLOSET

Three slow knocks echoed through the silent bedroom.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Lily Mercer stopped breathing.

She pressed both hands over her mouth so whoever stood outside wouldn't hear her crying.

The closet was completely dark except for the faint glow from her father's phone.

On the other end of the call, Marcus Mercer heard every sound.

He heard the trembling breath.

The wooden floor creak.

The rain striking the mansion windows.

And then...

A woman's voice.

Soft.

Sweet.

Dangerous.

"Lily?"

Cassandra Vale.

"My angel," she cooed through the bedroom door. "Come out, sweetheart. I brought you hot chocolate."

Lily shook her head violently.

Marcus had told her only seconds ago.

Don't eat. Don't drink. Don't trust anyone.

The little girl remained perfectly still.

Outside, Cassandra waited.

No answer.

Her voice changed slightly.

"I know you're scared."

Silence.

"Lily... Daddy isn't coming."

Marcus felt something inside him die.

Then Cassandra laughed.

Not loudly.

Just enough for everyone standing in the hallway to hear.

"Children always believe promises."

Another voice joined her.

A deep male voice.

Richard Wells.

Marcus's chief financial officer.

"We don't have much time," Wells muttered.

"The buyers crossed the border this afternoon."

"They want proof the child is alive."

Lily squeezed the phone tighter.

Marcus's eyes became completely empty.

He quietly opened another phone lying beside him.

Without saying a word, he pressed one encrypted contact.

Only one.

VIKTOR.

The line connected instantly.

"I thought you were dead," the man answered.

Marcus replied with only six words.

"They touched my daughter."

Silence.

Then Viktor spoke.

"How many coffins?"

Marcus looked toward the London skyline.

"No coffins."

"I want survivors."

"They need to explain everything before they disappear."

Across Eastern Europe...

Across Dubai...

Across Mexico...

Across ports, casinos, shipping companies, private airports...

Phones began ringing.

Old debts awakened.

Men who hadn't heard Marcus Mercer's voice in almost two years quietly stood from poker tables, boardrooms, private yachts and underground clubs.

One sentence spread across continents.

"The King is coming home."

Back in Beverly Hills...

Inside the hallway...

Richard Wells glanced toward Cassandra.

"Maybe she's asleep."

Cassandra smiled.

"No."

"She's listening."

She leaned against the bedroom door.

"Lily..."

"You know your daddy doesn't love you."

The words sliced through the little girl's heart.

"If he loved you..."

"He wouldn't have left you for fourteen months."

Inside the closet...

Tiny tears rolled silently down Lily's cheeks.

Marcus heard them all.

His voice remained steady.

"Baby."

"Look at your shoes."

Lily blinked.

"My shoes?"

"The red sneakers."

She looked down.

"Yes."

"Pull out the left insole."

Confused, Lily obeyed.

Hidden beneath the sole...

A tiny silver button.

"What is this?"

Marcus smiled for the first time.

"I hoped you'd never need it."

"Press it."

Click.

Nothing happened.

Outside...

Nothing happened either.

Or so Cassandra believed.

Three miles away...

Inside a warehouse disguised as an antique furniture company...

A forgotten control panel suddenly flashed bright red.

EMERGENCY SIGNAL: LILY MERCER

Five retired security operators stared at the screen.

One whispered...

"Oh God..."

"She's activated Guardian."

Another grabbed his rifle.

"Call everyone."

"We failed Mr. Mercer once."

"We don't fail the little girl."

Within ninety seconds...

Twelve black SUVs exploded from hidden garages beneath Los Angeles.

No sirens.

No lights.

Just war.

Meanwhile...

Marcus walked calmly toward the private elevator inside the London penthouse.

His government escort noticed immediately.

"Mr. Mercer."

"You cannot leave."

"You are under federal protection."

Marcus didn't stop walking.

"My daughter called."

The agents exchanged worried looks.

"Your cooperation agreement—"

Marcus interrupted.

"It ends now."

"You leave this building and you're vulnerable."

Marcus turned slowly.

The expression on his face made armed federal agents unconsciously step backward.

"I am not the one who should feel vulnerable."

Twenty-eight thousand feet above the Atlantic...

A jet that officially did not exist was already warming its engines.

No registration.

No flight plan.

No passengers listed.

Its pilot received only four words.

"Bring the King home."

The engines roared into the storm.

Inside the mansion...

Cassandra's patience finally disappeared.

She nodded toward two armed men.

"Break the door."

The first kick shook the entire hallway.

Inside the closet...

Lily screamed.

"Daddy!"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Count to twenty."

"What?"

"Just count."

"But they're coming!"

"I know."

"One..."

The second kick splintered the bedroom door.

"Two..."

The third shattered the lock.

"Three..."

The bedroom door burst open.

Heavy footsteps rushed inside.

The closet handle slowly began turning.

Lily reached...

"Nineteen..."

"Twen—"

May you like

BOOM!

The entire front gate of Mercer Estate exploded inward.
