CHAPTER 7 — THE LITTLE GIRL WHO STOPPED A WAR

Concrete dust filled the underground auction hall.

Emergency lights flashed crimson across broken marble walls.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Marcus Mercer stood beneath the hole he had crashed through, rainwater dripping from his black coat onto the polished floor.

His eyes never left Adrian Black.

The billionaire crime boss didn't look angry.

He looked... disappointed.

"You've gotten slower," Adrian said with a faint smile.

Marcus answered coldly.

"I still arrived before you sold my daughter."

Around the room, more than thirty armed mercenaries raised assault rifles.

Laser sights covered Marcus from every direction.

Samuel screamed, "Marcus, don't!"

Marcus didn't even blink.

"You're pointing guns at the wrong man."

Adrian chuckled.

"No."

"They're pointing them at the only man who still believes rules matter."

He snapped his fingers.

Every screen in the auction hall lit up.

Satellite feeds.

Police scanners.

News broadcasts.

Live financial markets.

Adrian spread his arms.

"You think this is about Lily?"

"No."

"This is about your empire."

He tapped one screen.

Marcus's offshore companies were being frozen one by one.

Another screen.

Federal agents were raiding warehouses in Los Angeles.

Another.

Banks across Europe had frozen billions in Mercer assets.

Richard Wells hadn't merely stolen forty-five million dollars.

For nearly two years, he had quietly emptied Marcus's empire from the inside.

Adrian smiled.

"While you hid in London making deals with the government..."

"I bought your accountants."

"I bought your judges."

"I bought your politicians."

"I even bought some of your oldest friends."

Marcus remained silent.

Then...

He smiled.

The expression unsettled everyone in the room.

"You spent seven years destroying my empire."

Adrian nodded proudly.

"I did."

Marcus slowly reached into his jacket.

Mercenaries tightened their fingers on the triggers.

Instead of a gun...

He pulled out a small stuffed rabbit.

Old.

Worn.

Missing one button eye.

Lily gasped.

"My bunny..."

Marcus tossed it gently toward her.

She caught it instinctively.

"Open the zipper."

Confused, Lily unzipped the toy.

Inside...

A tiny encrypted flash drive.

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"No..."

Marcus looked directly at him.

"You stole my money."

"I let you."

"You hacked my companies."

"I watched."

"You thought I was protecting my fortune."

"I wasn't."

"I was protecting that."

Every person in the room suddenly understood.

The real empire...

May you like

Had never been in the banks.

It had been hidden inside the toy Marcus gave Lily years ago.
