CHAPTER 14 — THE TRUTH ABOUT LILY

Forty-eight hours later...
Marcus, Lily, Ethan, Emily, and Viktor gathered inside a secure federal facility.
For the first time in years...
No one was running.
No one was hiding.
Emily placed several classified files onto the table.
"We finally opened Ashford's private archives."
Marcus slowly turned the pages.
Financial records.
Political donations.
Private intelligence reports.
Photographs.
Then...
A faded medical file.
Patient:
Lily Mercer
Marcus frowned.
"This can't be right."
Emily nodded.
"It's authentic."
"It was hidden for years."
Marcus opened the report.
His breathing slowed.
Lily had not been targeted because of money.
Or inheritance.
Or revenge.
She had been targeted because Elena had secretly documented evidence linking Arthur Ashford to decades of financial crimes, political corruption, and murders committed through shell corporations.
Before Elena disappeared, she encrypted every piece of evidence.
She never stored it in a bank.
She never trusted computers.
Instead...
She divided the encryption key.
Half was hidden inside the stuffed rabbit Marcus had given Lily.
The other half...
Was encoded into a lullaby Elena sang only to her children.
Marcus looked toward Lily.
"Do you remember Mommy singing to you?"
Lily lowered her eyes.
"I thought they were dreams."
She softly began humming the melody.
Emily's laptop suddenly beeped.
A sequence of numbers appeared automatically.
The melody wasn't just a song.
It was a mathematical cipher.
The second half of Elena's evidence had finally been unlocked.
Viktor whispered,
"My God..."
"There are thousands of documents."
Emily stared at the screen.
"Enough evidence to imprison half the people Arthur controls."
Marcus smiled for the first time in days.
"Then we're finally ending this."
Suddenly...
Every light inside the building went dark.
May you like
Emergency alarms screamed.
Someone had cut the power.
