CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Marcus Mercer had survived wars between crime families.
He had survived prison.
Federal investigations.
Assassination attempts.
Even betrayal from men he had called brothers.
But nothing prepared him for hearing one name.
Adrian Black.
Everyone believed Adrian had died seven years earlier in a yacht explosion off the coast of Sicily.
Marcus had seen the burned wreckage himself.
He had buried an empty coffin because no body was ever recovered.
Now the ghost was smiling from a monitor only a few feet away from Lily.
Marcus's voice became frighteningly quiet.
"Viktor."
"Find him."
"I don't care how."
"I want Adrian breathing."
"Only until I ask my questions."
Inside the hidden cellar...
Lily clung tightly to Samuel's hand.
The old groundskeeper stepped protectively in front of her.
"You'll never touch this child."
Adrian smiled.
"You still think this is about kidnapping?"
"No."
"This little girl is the last key."
Samuel frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Adrian slowly opened a leather folder resting on the table beside him.
Inside...
Old adoption records.
Hospital files.
DNA reports.
Birth certificates.
He held one document toward the camera.
"Lily Mercer."
Samuel's eyes widened.
"No..."
Adrian chuckled.
"Marcus adopted her."
"That part is true."
"But what Marcus never knew..."
"...is who her biological parents really were."
The room fell silent.
Lily looked confused.
"I don't understand..."
Adrian leaned closer to the camera.
"You were never abandoned."
"You were hidden."
Samuel felt his knees weaken.
Only three people had ever known that secret.
Marcus.
Samuel.
And...
The woman who had disappeared after the adoption.
"Impossible," Samuel whispered.
"She's dead."
Adrian smiled.
"No."
"She's been working for me."
Meanwhile...
Forty thousand feet above the Atlantic...
Marcus stared at the adoption documents flashing across his encrypted tablet.
Every page.
Every signature.
Every fingerprint.
Authentic.
Someone had broken into the federal adoption archive.
Or...
Someone inside the system had helped them.
His satellite phone vibrated.
An unfamiliar number.
Marcus answered without speaking.
A woman's voice whispered.
"Don't trust Samuel."
The line disconnected.
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
For the first time that night...
He no longer knew who was lying.
Back inside the mansion...
Cassandra watched security cameras one by one lose signal.
Her empire was collapsing.
Every escape route blocked.
Every guard captured.
Richard Wells was shaking uncontrollably.
"We should surrender."
Cassandra slapped him hard enough to knock him against the wall.
"You fool."
"If Marcus reaches us alive..."
"There won't be a prison."
"There won't be a courtroom."
"There will only be graves."
She pulled a hidden pistol from her dress.
"If I can't have his fortune..."
"...I'll make sure he loses the only thing he loves."
She turned toward the cellar.
Toward Lily.
But someone else was already moving through the tunnels.
A young woman dressed as one of the housemaids quietly removed her disguise.
Underneath...
She wore tactical armor.
An earpiece crackled.
"Agent Harper."
"Target located."
She answered softly.
"I'm taking the girl."
"Before Marcus gets here."

Before anyone could ask why...
She disappeared into the darkness.
