Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW OF ST. JUDE'S

The hospital corridor became a nightmare of blinding fluorescent lights and screaming alarms.

Code Red! Code Red! Security breach on Floor 4!

Maya’s sneakers slapped against the polished floors. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She held the letter tightly against her chest, the folded paper crumpled in her trembling fist.

Behind her, the heavy boots of three security guards thundered down the hall.

"Corner her at the elevators!" a guard shouted.

Maya sprinted past the nurse's station, knocking over a cart of sterile trays. Syringes, bandages, and glass vials shattered across the floor, slowing down her pursuers just enough. She didn't head for the main elevators—she knew Julian’s team would remotely override them. Instead, she threw her body against the heavy fire door leading to the emergency stairwell.

She plummeted down the concrete stairs, taking three steps at a time, her vision blurring with adrenaline.

Floor 3... Floor 2... Basement.

If she went out the front doors, Julian’s private security team would intercept her at the gates. Her only chance was the subterranean maintenance tunnels—the old boiler network that connected the main hospital to the abandoned psychiatric wing built in the 1950s.

Maya burst through the basement service door into a dark, humid corridor smelling of rust, ozone, and wet concrete. The thick pipes above her hissed violently as steam escaped from worn valves.

Suddenly, a hand shot out from a dark alcove and grabbed her arm!

Maya screamed, driving her elbow backward, but the figure caught her arm deftly, pulling her into the shadows of a utility closet just as the security guards burst into the basement hallway, their flashlights cutting through the steam.

"Quiet if you want to live," a raspy voice whispered in her ear.

Maya held her breath, her eyes adjusting to the dim red emergency light. The person holding her was a woman in her late thirties, dressed in an oversized maintenance jumpsuit. Her face was scarred along the jawline, and her left eye was clouded with a white cataract.

The security guards’ footsteps faded into the distance.

The woman released Maya and stepped back, her good eye locked onto the paper in Maya’s hand.

"You found it," the woman whispered.

"Who are you?" Maya gasped, clutching her chest, her voice trembling.

"My name is Detective Sarah Lin," the woman said, pulling a tarnished bronze badge from beneath her jumpsuit. "Or at least... I used to be a detective before Julian Sterling had me stripped of my badge, framed for corruption, and thrown into a psychiatric facility."

Maya’s eyes widened. "You... you know Julian?"

"Julian and Victoria Sterling don't just steal inheritances, kid," Sarah said bitterly, pulling a small penlight from her pocket. "They run a specialized syndicate inside St. Jude's. They target wealthy, solitary patients—usually widows or orphaned heiresses. They use a proprietary neurotoxin developed in the hospital’s private research lab to mimic degenerative paralysis. Once the victim is completely isolated and legally declared incapacitated, they transfer the assets, fake a sudden cardiac arrest, and cremate the body before an autopsy can be performed."

Maya felt the air leave her lungs. "That’s what happened to my mother... Eleanor Vance."

Sarah looked at Maya with deep sympathy. "Your mother wasn't just a victim, Maya. She was Dr. Vance’s sister. She was trying to expose them from the inside. She hid a master ledger containing thirty years of fraudulent medical deaths before they took her."

"The ledger..." Maya murmured, her mind racing. "Where is it?"

"It’s inside the wall of the old mortuary in Wing C," Sarah said. "I’ve been trying to get to it for six months, but Julian locked down the wing. But that paper in your hand... that’s the final piece of proof we need to trigger an federal intervention. If we can broadcast that document outside the hospital’s private server, their empire falls tonight."

Suddenly, the overhead lights flashed green—the signal that the basement doors were being electronically sealed from the central command tower.

A cold, synthetic voice echoed through the ventilation shafts:

"Attention facility staff. Subject Maya Vance is considered armed and dangerous. Lethal force is authorized under protocol Section 9. Repeat: Lethal force is authorized."

Sarah grabbed a heavy iron wrench from a tool rack. "Julian isn't letting us leave this basement alive. They’re shutting off the air scrubbers to trap us. We have twenty minutes before the carbon monoxide levels in these lower levels reach fatal limits."

May you like

"What do we do?" Maya asked, her fear morphing into burning defiance.

Sarah smirked, a dangerous glint in her good eye. "We don't run away anymore, kid. We hijack their broadcast."
