Chapter 4 - THE WING OF FORGOTTEN SOULS

The basement server room was filled with the deafening hum of cooling fans as Sarah frantically uploaded the rest of the encrypted files from the master ledger to a cloud server.
"The stream has reached over fifty thousand live viewers!" Sarah yelled over the noise. "The police department just issued an emergency tactical response! They’re entering the perimeter now!"
"We need to get out!" Maya said, watching the security monitor.
On the screen, three armed men led by Julian Sterling were descending the service staircase, moving with terrifying speed toward the server hub.
"The air vents," Sarah pointed to a heavy steel grate near the ceiling. "It leads into the abandoned Wing C—the old psychiatric wing. They can't lock those doors electronically because the system was decommissioned twenty years ago."
Sarah used her wrench to pop the screws off the grate. She pushed Maya up first, then pulled herself into the dusty, cramped duct just as the server room door was blown open with a heavy shotgun blast!
BANG! BANG!
Bullets tore through the server racks, sending sparks and smoke cascading into the air.
Julian stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the empty chair and the open vent. He lifted his radio to his mouth, his voice dripping with pure rage.
"Seal all exits to Wing C," Julian commanded. "Release the containment gas into the ventilation shafts. If I can't have this hospital, nobody leaves it."
Inside the dark air duct, Maya and Sarah crawled frantically as a sweet, almond-scented gas began pouring from the vents behind them.
"Cyanide mix!" Sarah coughed, her eyes watering. "Cover your mouth! Keep moving!"
They tumbled out of the vent onto the cold, dusty floor of Wing C.
Unlike the pristine, marble-tiled floors of the main hospital, Wing C was a rotting graveyard of medical history. Peeling paint hung from the walls like dead skin. Rusted wheel chairs and discarded gurneys lined the dark corridors. The only light came from the pale moonlight filtering through high, barred windows.
Maya gasped for air, pulling her sweater over her nose. "Which way?!"
"The old mortuary!" Sarah wheezed, stumbling forward. "The physical ledger is hidden in the wall safe behind the autopsy table! We need the actual original documents to prove systemic murder, not just extortion!"
They ran down the pitch-black corridor, their footsteps echoing through the cavernous wing.
Behind them, the heavy iron doors of Wing C slammed shut with a sickening CLANG.
They were trapped.
From the shadows at the far end of the hallway, a slow, methodical clicking sound began.
Click... step. Click... step.
Maya pulled Sarah back into a doorway.
A figure emerged from the moonlight. It was Victoria Sterling.
She was no longer wearing her hospital gown. She wore a black tactical jacket, her eyes wild, her teeth bared in a psychotic grin. In her right hand, she held a heavy steel scalpel. In her left, she carried an industrial stun baton, crackling with high-voltage electricity.
"Did you really think I was just a helpless puppet, little girl?" Victoria sneered, her voice echoing in the hollow hall. "Julian handles the money. But I handle the deaths. I was the one who put the needle in your mother's arm while she cried for you."

Maya’s blood ran ice cold. "You monster..."
"Your mother was weak!" Victoria shrieked, lunging forward with terrifying speed! "And so are you!"
