Chapter 3 - THE BLOOD MONITORS

Upstairs in the executive suite on the 12th floor, Julian Sterling stood before a wall of glass overlooking the city skyline. He slowly swirled a glass of scotch, his expression emotionless despite the red emergency lights flashing along the ceiling.

Behind him, Victoria was frantically pacing, clutching a silk robe over her medical gown.

"You said this was foolproof!" Victoria spat, her voice pitched high with panic. "You said the kid was isolated in a foster home three states away! How did she find out about the cast? How did she get into Room 408?!"

Julian didn't turn around. "You got sloppy, Victoria. You twitched your foot."

"Because the dosage was wearing off!" she yelled, her composure completely shattered. "Dr. Vance lowered my neurotoxin injections last week because he suspected something! I was regaining sensation!"

Julian turned around slowly, his gaze icy. "Dr. Vance is being taken care of. He signed a full confession five minutes ago admitting to falsifying your medical records and conspiring with Maya to blackmail us. By morning, the police will have his body fished out of the river, alongside Maya’s."

Victoria paused, wiping sweat from her forehead. "And the paper? The note you signed?"

"Buried with them," Julian said smoothly. "Now sit down and put your leg back in the brace. The media will be here in an hour. You are still the grieving, paralyzed philanthropist whose hospital was attacked by a lunatic teenager."

Before Victoria could answer, the room’s grand monitor—which usually displayed the hospital’s stock prices and promotional videos—flickered violently.

Static hissed from the surround-sound speakers.

Julian frowned, setting his glass down. "What is this?"

The static cleared, replaced by a raw, shaky video feed.

It was taken from inside the hospital’s main server room in the basement. Sitting in front of the master control terminal was Maya, her face pale but her eyes fixed on the camera. Beside her stood Sarah Lin, holding a bundle of cut fiber-optic cables that bypassed the facility's security firewall.

"Is this working?" Maya’s voice echoed through every monitor, TV screen, and digital display board across all twelve floors of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital—and stream directly to the hospital’s official public Facebook and Instagram live feeds.

"Shut it down!" Julian screamed into his radio. "Cut the power to the server room! Cut it now!"

"If you’re watching this," Maya continued, holding up the blood-stained note written in Julian’s handwriting, "my name is Maya Vance. Two years ago, my mother was murdered in Room 408 of this hospital. Tonight, I found the proof."

The camera zoomed in on the document. The signature, the precise medical dosages, and the explicit instructions to keep patients medically paralyzed for financial liquidation were illuminated under the harsh camera light.

"Julian Sterling and Victoria Sterling have spent ten years running an illegal execution network inside this hospital," Maya’s voice shook, but she didn't stop. "They don't cure people. They harvest their estates. And right now, Julian has ordered his guards to execute me in the basement to keep this secret."

In the lobby below, hundreds of night-shift staff, visiting family members, and local journalists who had been waiting for an press conference gasped in horror as the live video played on the giant lobby wall.

"My God..." a nurse whispered, pointing at the screen. "That’s... that’s Mr. Sterling’s signature!"

Inside the executive suite, Julian’s phone began ringing uncontrollably. Calls from the board of directors, the police chief, and news networks flooded his line.

Julian’s face turned gray. He grabbed a heavy silver pistol from his desk drawer.

"Victoria, stay here," he growled, racking the slide.

"Julian, where are you going?!" she screamed, her voice cracking with terror.

"To finish this myself."
