Chapter 1 - The Blood On The PorcelainThe attic room smelled of copper and rain.

I leaned against the rotting wood of my door, my lungs burning as if I had swallowed glass. The encounter with Julian—the undisputed, ruthless heir to the Moretti crime syndicate—had left my pulse racing wildly against my ribs. But it wasn't just fear of his dark eyes or his suffocating authority that made me tremble.

It was the warm, sticky fluid slowly soaking through the cheap fabric of my threadbare nightgown.

I reached behind my back, my fingers trembling as they made contact with the laceration beneath my shoulder blade. A hiss escaped my teeth. The bandage I had hastily applied before my shift had split open while I was scrubbing those damn dishes.

"Careful, Emma," I whispered into the dark, pulling off the ruined gown.

In the cracked mirror resting on the vanity, I stared at my reflection. The low light revealed a mosaic of violet, black, and yellow bruises mottling my ribs and lower back. To a casual observer—like the overbearing Mrs. Chen—they looked like the aftermath of a violent fall, the clumsy injuries of a disgraced woman forced into servitude.

To anyone who knew the language of violence, however, those bruises bore the distinct, brutal signatures of defensive martial arts combat and close-quarters tactical evasions.

I wasn't just a broke factory worker who had lost her apartment.

My real name wasn't Emma Whitmore.

I pulled a small, silver-cased encrypted satellite phone from beneath a loose floorboard. My fingers flew across the modified glass screen, typing a high-frequency code.

Target contact established, I typed to an anonymous receiver. Julian Moretti is aware of my presence. The undercover position remains uncompromised, but the physical strain is escalating. Requesting immediate extraction parameters.

The reply came back in three seconds, cold and uncompromising:

NEGATIVE. THE MORETTI FAMILY SLAUGHTERED YOUR UNIT THREE YEARS AGO. YOU STAY UNTIL YOU FIND THE LEDGER. DESTROY THEM FROM THE INSIDE OR DIE TRYING.

I closed my eyes, a bitter tear cutting through the dust on my cheek. Three years ago, I was Agent Evelyn Vance of the Federal Covert Taskforce. My entire squad had been ambushed and executed in a warehouse setting that bore the signature mark of the Moretti syndicate. I had survived by playing dead beneath the bloodied corpses of my teammates, suffering broken ribs and deep lacerations that left indelible scars across my spine.

I had feigned my own death, wiped my identity, and stripped away my former life to infiltrate the impenetrable Moretti manor as a low-level maid. I was searching for the Black Ledger—the encrypted hard drive containing the names of every corrupt official, judge, and rival boss the Moretti family bought or murdered.

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of my attic room clicked.

The lock was turning.

Panicking, I shoved the satellite phone under my pillow, grabbed a threadbare shawl to cover my blood-stained back, and spun around just as the door swung open.

Framed in the doorway was not Mrs. Chen, but Julian Moretti himself.

He had removed his jacket. His crisp white shirt was unbuttoned further, revealing a dark dragon tattoo coiling up his neck. In his right hand, he held a glass of dark amber whiskey. In his left, he carried a heavy velvet box.

"You left your silver cross on the sink, Emma," Julian said, his voice a low, dangerous purr that reverberated through the tiny room.

He stepped inside, his presence immediately shrinking the space until the air felt too thick to breathe. His sharp gray eyes swept over the cramped attic, taking in the leaking ceiling, the narrow cot, and finally, my rigid stance.

"Sir, you shouldn't be here," I breathed, pulling the shawl tightly around my chest. "If Mrs. Chen—"

"Mrs. Chen works for me," he cut me off smoothly, taking a slow step forward. "And right now, Mrs. Chen is sleeping off a very generous dose of liquid sedative I had placed in her evening tea."

My heart stopped. "Why?"

Julian set the whiskey glass down on my rickety nightstand. His gaze shifted from my eyes down to the floor beneath my feet.

A single drop of fresh blood had fallen from beneath my shawl onto the bare floorboards.

"Because," Julian whispered, his eyes darkening into something ravenous and lethal, "I don't like being lied to in my own house. And I especially dislike when my maids bleed on my floorboards."

Before I could react, his arm shot out. He didn't strike me—he grabbed the corner of my shawl and yanked it away in one fluid, terrifying movement.

The cotton tore. The room light caught the open laceration on my shoulder and the dark, violent bruising across my skin.

Julian stared at the wounds. His breath caught, his jaw clenching so hard the muscle leaped beneath his skin. But it wasn't disgust in his eyes—it was recognition.

He reached out, his thumb catching a droplet of blood from my shoulder. He pressed the crimson stain against his own lips, tasting it, before locking his eyes onto mine.

"These aren't bruises from a fall, Emma," Julian whispered, his voice dripping with lethal realization. "These are combat marks. Krav Maga. Disarm techniques." He leaned in so close I could feel the heat radiating off his body. "Who sent you to kill me?"
