Chapter 8 - The Final TwistSix Months Later.

The Federal Court of Appeals was dead silent.
I stood at the podium in a crisp dress uniform, gold medals shining on my chest. I had been fully reinstated, promoted to Special Agent in Charge, and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
In the defense dock sat Julian Moretti. He wore an orange prison jumpsuit, yet he carried himself with the same regal, terrifying grace he had in his mansion.
"Agent Vance," the judge called out from the bench. "You have provided overwhelming evidence dismantling the Vane Street Syndicate. However, the defendant, Julian Moretti, still faces twenty years for his historical involvement in racketeering and illegal distribution."
The judge looked down at me. "Do you have any final statements before sentencing?"
I looked across the courtroom at Julian. He gave me a subtle, reassuring nod, as if telling me it was okay—that he was willing to pay his debt to the world if it meant I was safe.
I stepped closer to the microphone.
"Your Honor," I said clearly, my voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "The evidence provided on the silver hard drive was incomplete."
A murmur rippled through the courtroom. Julian’s eyes narrowed in confusion.
"Incomplete?" the judge frowned. "Explain."
"Six months ago, I conducted a deep forensic audit of the entire Moretti network," I lied effortlessly, leaning into the microphone. "Julian Moretti was not an officer of the syndicate. He was an undercover operative working under the direct, classified command of my former unit leader, Commander Thomas—who was killed in action three years ago."
Gasps erupted across the gallery.
Julian’s jaw dropped. He stared at me in absolute, utter shock.
"Julian Moretti spent five years infiltrating his own family’s criminal empire to provide federal intelligence," I continued, holding the judge’s gaze without a single blink. "Every action he took was under covert federal authorization to bring down Marcus Vane. His file was classified under Level 9 Executive Immunity."
I reached into my blazer and pulled out a stamped, sealed document—a document I had spent the last three months meticulously forging using high-level Taskforce encryption codes I had memorized.
"I am submitting his official exoneration paperwork now, Your Honor."
The judge reviewed the forged documents handed up by the bailiff. He adjusted his glasses, thoroughly impressed by the official seals and high-level clearance stamps.
"In light of this classified testimony from Special Agent Vance..." the judge announced, striking his gavel down. "All charges against Julian Moretti are dismissed with prejudice. The defendant is cleared of all counts."
BANG!
The courtroom erupted into noise.
An hour later, the rear doors of the federal courthouse opened.
Julian stepped out onto the marble steps, taking his first breath of free air as a completely clean man. He was wearing a dark, custom-tailored suit I had left for him in his holding cell.
I was standing at the bottom of the steps, leaning against a vintage black sports car, twirling a set of keys on my finger.
Julian walked down the steps slowly, stopping right in front of me.
"You lied under oath, Agent Vance," Julian whispered, a dangerous, breathless smile spreading across his face. "You committed perjury for a mafia boss."
"I didn't lie for a mafia boss," I said, stepping close, reaching up to fix the collar of his shirt just like I used to do in the mansion. "I lied for my partner. The man who saved my life."
Julian reached out, wrapping his hand over mine, his warm fingers weaving through mine.
"So," Julian murmured, his dark eyes burning into mine with an intensity that made my heart race all over again. "What happens now, Evelyn? You aren't a maid, and I'm no longer a crime boss."
I smiled, pulling the silver hard drive from my pocket and tossing it into the river below the courthouse bridge.

"Now," I whispered, pulling his face down to mine, "we write our own story."
