Chapter 4 - The Poisoned AllianceThe barrel of Julian’s gun didn't tremble. Neither did mine.

We stood in the blood-stained warehouse, locked in a standoff over six dead bodies. Viktor Volkov was down on his knees, hands raised, completely forgotten in the crossfire of our revelation.

"Drop the gun, Evelyn," Julian commanded, his voice dripping with venom. "Or whatever your real name is."

"I saved your life, Moretti," I spat, my finger resting lightly on the trigger of the Glock. "If I wanted you dead, I would have let that sniper put a bullet through your forehead."

"You saved me because you need me alive to get what you came for!" Julian roared, stepping closer, pressing his chest against the muzzle of my gun. "The Ledger! That’s why you’re here, isn't it? You’re a Fed!"

"I am the ghost of the people your family murdered!" I screamed back, three years of rage and suppression finally breaking through my wall of discipline. "Three years ago! The Harbor Warehouse massacre! You wiped out Taskforce 9! My team! My family!"

Julian stopped. The burning rage in his eyes suddenly flickered, replaced by a profound, jarring confusion.

"Taskforce 9?" Julian repeated, his voice dropping. "The Federal raid on the shipping yards three years ago?"

"Don't pretend you don't know!" I yelled, my eyes stinging with unshed tears. "Your father gave the order!"

"My father didn't order that strike," Julian said, his voice flat, intense, and terrifyingly calm. "My father was in a coma in Switzerland three years ago. The man who ordered the hit on Taskforce 9... was Marcus Vane. The head of the Vane Street Syndicate."

My breath caught in my throat. "You’re lying. The casings left at the scene were Moretti custom-stamped rounds!"

"Because Vane hijacked our shipment two days prior!" Julian snapped. He reached into his suit pocket slowly, pulling out an encrypted tablet. He tossed it to me. "Look at the logs! Vane set up my family to take the fall for murdering federal agents so the FBI would crush us while he took over the city's distribution lines!"

I caught the tablet, my mind spinning into chaos. I skimmed the dated files, the internal communications, the ballistics audits. The data was undeniable. The digital signatures belonged to Marcus Vane—the very man I thought had been trying to hunt me down for knowing Moretti secrets.

All this time... I was hunting the wrong monster.

"Marcus Vane killed your squad," Julian whispered, taking a step toward me, his voice softening. "And Marcus Vane is the man who gave you those bruises on your back three months ago when you almost stumbled onto his territory."

I lowered my gun slowly. The weight of three years of misplaced vengeance crashed down on me, making my knees buckle. I almost fell, but Julian’s arms were there immediately, wrapping around my waist, holding me up.

His touch was no longer that of a captor. It was fierce, protective, and overwhelmingly warm.

"Why didn't you tell the authorities?" I choked out, looking up into his storm-gray eyes.

"Because the Feds have a mole in high command," Julian said, his face inches from mine. "If I released the truth, Vane’s mole would erase the evidence and liquidate my family before sunrise. I needed absolute proof. I needed the physical hard drive Vane used to frame us."

"The hard drive..." I whispered. "It’s not in your father’s safe?"

"No," Julian said softly, his thumb gently wiping a tear from my cheek. "It’s in Marcus Vane’s impenetrable vault at the Grand Casino. And I can't break into it alone."

He rested his forehead against mine, his breath warm against my lips.

"Help me burn Marcus Vane to the ground, Evelyn," Julian whispered, using my real name for the first time. "Help me get justice for your squad. And in return... I give you your freedom."

I looked into the eyes of the mafia heir I had spent three years hating, only to realize he was the only ally I had left in a world built on lies.

"I don't just want justice, Julian," I murmured, my hand creeping up to the back of his neck, tangling in his dark hair. "I want vengeance."

Julian’s eyes flared with an intense, dark passion. Without another word, he pulled me into him and slammed his lips onto mine.
