Chapter 2 - The Edge Of The KnifeThe air in the attic turned sub-zero.

Every instinct I had cultivated over eight years of special operations training screamed at me to strike. I could break his trachea with an open-palm thrust, sweep his front leg, and drop him before he could pull a weapon.
But as I flexed my fingers, Julian's right hand moved with blinding speed.
A cold steel barrel pressed firmly against the underside of my chin. A customized, silenced Sig Sauer p226.
"Don't," Julian warned, his voice dropped an octave, smooth as velvet, sharp as a razor. "I saw your posture the moment I walked in. The weight distribution on your heels. The way your eyes mapped the exits. You aren't a maid, Emma. Or whatever your real name is."
I held his gaze, refusing to let him see the fear electrifying my nervous system. "If you were going to shoot me, you would have done it in the kitchen, Mr. Moretti."
A slow, terrifying smirk spread across his sculpted lips. "Touché. You have nerve. I like nerve."
He didn't lower the gun, but he shifted his grip, using the cold silencer to tilt my face further up toward the light. He inspected the deep cut on my shoulder with a surgeon’s precision.
"This blade cut was made by a double-edged trench knife," Julian observed coldly. "Standard issue for the Vane Street Syndicate. Our rivals. They jumped you before you took this job, didn't they?"
I calculated my odds in a split second. If he thought I was an escaped victim or a rogue operative from a rival syndicate, I could play into that narrative. It was better than him knowing I was federal law enforcement sent to dismantle his family's empire.
"They wanted information on your father's security layout," I lied smoothly, crafting a narrative out of half-truths. "I refused to give it to them. They tried to break me. I escaped. I needed the safest place in the city to hide—and ironic as it sounds, the home of the Moretti heir was the only place they wouldn't dare raid."
Julian stared deep into my eyes, searching for a tremor, a blink, a crack in my armor. For ten agonizing seconds, the only sound was the rain hammering against the roof tiles.
Then, slowly, he lowered the gun and engaged the safety.
"You brought a war to my doorstep, little bird," he murmured, his fingers brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. The touch was agonizingly gentle, starkly contrasting the deadliness of the gun he had just held to my throat.
"I brought you discretion," I countered, stepping back to break the unbearable proximity. "I work. I clean. I stay out of sight."
"Not anymore," Julian said, his eyes flashing with a dark, possessive fire. "Starting tomorrow morning, you no longer work for Mrs. Chen. You don't wash dishes. You don't sweep floors."
"What are you talking about?"
"My father is retiring next week," Julian said, stepping closer until my back hit the wall. "The commission requires me to present a unified front. I need a personal assistant who knows how to handle a knife, who doesn't faint at the sight of blood, and who owes me her life."
"I don't owe you anything."
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black flash drive. He dangled it between his thumb and forefinger.
"This contains the CCTV footage of you entering the estate three months ago, along with your fake background file," he said softly. "One call to the Vane Street Syndicate, and they’ll know where to find their escaped bird. Or... you take the promotion. You stand by my side. You get paid ten times your current wage, a real room, and my personal protection."
I looked at the drive, my heart thumping wildly. The Black Ledger I was hunting for was kept in the safe inside Julian’s private office—an office restricted to everyone except his personal inner circle. This forced promotion was the exact key I needed to complete my mission.
"What's the catch?" I asked cautiously.
May you like
Julian stepped into my personal space, his hand resting lightly on the wall beside my head. His breath fanned across my lips.
"The catch, Emma... is that once you enter my world, you never, ever get to leave."
