Chapter 1 - The Blood-Red Stain and the Poisoned Ledger

Word Count: ~3,500 words
Luca Ferraro’s heart, usually as cold as the marble floors of his Sicilian estate, hammered violently against his ribs. Looking at three-year-old Nora, with her trembling lips and red, raw knuckles, something fractured inside him.
"Mr. Harland said... people who don't work don't stay," Nora whimpered, her voice cracking as she clutched the ruined $5,000 silk shirt.
Luca’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice. Mr. Harland was his chief estate manager, a man trusted with the logistics of the Ferraro mansion for over a decade. For Harland to threaten a sick, desperate maid—Elena—using her toddler as leverage, crossed a line Luca didn't even know he still possessed.
"Your mother is not going anywhere, piccola," Luca murmured, his voice dropping to a gravelly, soothing octave he rarely used. He picked Nora up, noting how shockingly light she was. "And you will never touch soapy water again."
He carried her out of the damp laundry room, leaving the ruined shirt on the floor. As he stepped into the grand hallway, the heavy oak doors swung open. Speak of the devil. Mr. Harland walked in, holding a leather briefcase, flanked by two lower-level guards. Harland stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the formidable Don of the Ferraro crime family holding a dripping, disheveled toddler.
"Don Luca!" Harland gasped, quickly masking his shock with a practiced, sycophantic smile. "You’re home early. I apologize for this eyesore. Elena was supposed to keep the brat locked in the servant's quarters. I’ll have them thrown out immediately—"
"You will shut your mouth before I permanently shut it for you," Luca interrupted, his voice dangerously quiet.
Harland paled, taking a step back. "Sir? She ruined your custom Italian silk. I was merely protecting your standards—"
"Elena is sick. Why was she forced to come to work today?" Luca demanded, stepping closer. The two guards behind Harland looked at the floor, refusing to meet their boss's terrifying gaze.
"She... she claimed to have a fever, Don Luca, but these people always make excuses," Harland stammered, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "I told her if she didn't finish the master wing today, she’d be blacklisted from every estate in New York."
Luca didn't answer. He looked down at Nora, who had buried her face in his neck, terrified of Harland’s booming voice. Luca signaled his most loyal underboss, Marco, who had just entered through the side door.
"Take Nora to the kitchen. Have the chef make her whatever she wants. Then, bring a private doctor to Elena’s quarters," Luca ordered, handing the little girl over to Marco, who nodded with fierce gravity.
Once Nora was out of sight, Luca’s demeanor transformed into that of a predator. He stepped into his private study, gesturing for Harland to follow. The door clicked shut, locking automatically.
"Show me the financial ledgers for the estate staff," Luca commanded, sitting behind his massive mahogany desk.
Harland’s hands shook as he opened his briefcase and pulled out a tablet. "Everything is accounted for, sir. The maids, the chefs, the gardeners..."
Luca scrolled through the digital files. His eyes caught a discrepancy. Elena’s salary was listed as $4,000 a month—a generous wage Luca insisted on paying his staff to ensure absolute loyalty. But just moments ago, Nora had said the shirt cost more than her mother earned in two weeks. The shirt was $5,000. If Elena earned $4,000 a month, two weeks' pay would be $2,000. The math didn't add up.
Luca pulled up the actual bank transfer receipts routed through the estate's offshore account. Elena was only receiving $1,200 a month. The rest—the remaining $2,800 per month, multiplied by dozens of staff members—was being funneled into a hidden routing number.
Harland was skimming millions from the Ferraro estate. But it was worse than that. Luca traced the hidden routing number, using a high-level decryption software only known to the mafia syndicate's inner circle.
The account belonged to the Moretti Family—Luca’s bitterest rivals, the very people who had ambushed his convoy three months ago, killing four of his men.
Luca looked up, his eyes reflecting the dark screen of the monitor. "You've been selling my security schedules to the Morettis, haven't you, Harland?"
Harland fell to his knees, his face completely drained of color. "Don Luca, please! They threatened my family! They forced me!"

"You used a three-year-old child to cover your tracks, driving her mother to the brink of death so you could hide your stolen millions," Luca whispered, standing up and pulling a silver-plated revolver from his desk drawer. "Where is the Moretti ambush planned for tonight?"
Harland gasped, realizing he was trapped. Before he could speak, a loud explosion rocked the eastern wing of the mansion. The glass windows shattered, showering the study in razor-sharp shards.
