Chapter 3 - The Safehouse and the DNA Secret

Word Count: ~3,500 words
The safehouse was a heavily fortified cabin tucked deep within the Adirondack mountains. Surrounded by miles of dense forest and protected by automated motion sensors, it was the one place the Moretti family could never trace.
Dr. Evans, the Ferraro family's private physician, had arrived via helicopter two hours prior. He had just finished administering an IV drip to Elena in the master bedroom.
Luca stood on the porch, staring into the dark woods, a glass of scotch untouched in his hand. Marco approached him quietly.
"Harland is dead, boss. He bled out before we could get him to talk more. But we recovered his personal phone. The encryption is deep, but my guys found something... disturbing." Marco handed Luca a folder of printed text messages.
Luca flipped through them. The messages weren't just about security codes or drug shipments. They were about Elena.
Four years ago, the Moretti family had been looking for a way to infiltrate the Ferraro inner circle. They had targeted Elena, a young, naive woman working at a bakery Luca frequented. But according to the texts, Harland had discovered a secret that made Elena far more valuable than a mere spy.
"What is this, Marco?" Luca asked, his voice dripping with sudden tension.
"Look at the dates, boss. It matches up with the time you were captured by the Morettis in Chicago four years ago. The week you were drugged, tortured, and almost didn't make it out."
Luca’s breath hitched. Four years ago, he had escaped a Moretti safehouse, but he had spent three days wandering the city in a feverish, drug-induced delirium before his men found him. He had vague, ghostly memories of a woman with kind eyes who had hidden him in her apartment, nursing his wounds, before he vanished into the night to protect her.
He had never been able to find that woman again.
"Boss," Marco said gently. "We ran a rapid DNA test on Nora using the hair sample from the brush she used in the laundry room, comparing it to your medical records on file."
Marco handed him a second sheet of paper.
Luca’s hands, which had never shaken while holding a weapon, trembled violently as he read the bolded text at the bottom of the page:
PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.99%
Nora wasn't just the maid's daughter. She was his daughter.
The girl who had been standing barefoot on a wooden stool, washing his shirt in cold water to save her mother’s job, was the heir to the entire Ferraro empire.
Right then, the door to the bedroom opened. Dr. Evans stepped out, looking grim.

"Don Luca, the mother is awake. The fever has broken, but... she knows. She wants to speak to you immediately."
Luca dropped his glass of scotch. It shattered against the wooden porch floor, mirroring the explosion of emotions in his chest. He turned and walked into the dimly lit room. Elena was propped up against the pillows, her eyes wide with fear as she saw the DNA report clutched in his hand.
