CHAPTER 10 — The Last Bullet Was Never Fired

Police sirens surrounded the orphanage.

This time...

They weren't chasing Vincenzo.

They were coming because he had sent them every piece of evidence.

Secret bank accounts.

Hidden tunnels.

Kidnapping records.

Names of corrupt officials.

Everything.

Within hours...

The largest child trafficking network in the country's history collapsed.

Dozens of powerful criminals were arrested.

The news spread around the world.

But one question remained.

Where was Vincenzo Moretti?

No one knew.

Because before the police entered...

He had quietly disappeared.

One year later...

A small children's home opened in the countryside.

No luxury.

No guards.

No fences.

Just laughter.

The sign at the entrance simply read:

"Sofia's Home."

Sofia managed the home.

Ethan volunteered every afternoon after school.

Little Isabella had recovered completely and loved reading stories to the younger children.

The forty-two rescued children finally had a family.

One autumn afternoon...

An elderly gardener wearing a faded cap quietly planted white roses near the entrance.

The children loved him.

They called him...

"Grandpa Vin."

None of them knew who he really was.

One little boy ran over and asked,

"Grandpa..."

"Were you ever a hero?"

The old man smiled gently.

He looked at the children playing beneath the trees.

Then shook his head.

"No."

"I was once a very bad man..."

"...who was lucky enough to get one last chance to do something good."

The boy hugged him tightly.

"You don't look bad."

Vincenzo laughed through tears.

"That's because of all of you."

Across the road, Marco watched with a smile.

The Devil of Chicago was gone forever.

In his place stood only a grandfather who had finally found peace.

As the sun began to set, Sofia walked over and slipped her arm through her father's.

"Ready to go home?"

Vincenzo looked at the children chasing each other across the grass.

For the first time in decades...

He truly understood what home meant.

He smiled.

"Yes."

May you like

"Let's go home."

THE END.
