CHAPTER 1 — The Most Dangerous Man in America Fell at the Feet of the Only Woman Who Wasn't Afraid of Him

Rain poured over the deserted streets of Chicago like the city itself was trying to wash away blood.

Three black SUVs raced through the industrial district.

Gunfire shattered the silence.

Inside the lead vehicle sat Vincent Moretti, the most feared mafia boss in the country.

For twenty years his name had been enough to stop wars before they started.

Politicians feared him.

Cartels respected him.

His enemies disappeared without leaving graves.

Tonight...

Someone had betrayed him.

"BOSS! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!"

His driver barely finished speaking before a rocket exploded against the second SUV.

The vehicle flipped through the air.

Flames lit the night.

Vincent grabbed his pistol.

"Take the alley."

Too late.

Another explosion.

The armored SUV slammed into a warehouse wall.

Glass exploded.

Metal screamed.

Everything went black.

...

Minutes later...

Vincent dragged himself through the rain.

Blood poured from a bullet wound beneath his ribs.

His expensive Italian suit was soaked red.

Every breath felt like swallowing broken glass.

He reached for his phone.

No signal.

His security team...

Dead.

His captains...

Silent.

His empire...

Gone in a single night.

For the first time since becoming boss...

Vincent Moretti was completely alone.

Footsteps echoed nearby.

He raised his pistol.

A young woman stepped into the alley carrying grocery bags.

She couldn't have been older than twenty-five.

Simple jeans.

Old sneakers.

A gray hoodie.

No jewelry.

No makeup.

No fear.

She looked at the gun...

Then looked directly into Vincent's eyes.

"You need a doctor."

Vincent laughed weakly.

"You know who I am?"

She nodded.

"Everyone does."

"Then run."

Instead...

She walked closer.

Vincent pulled the trigger.

Click.

Empty.

The woman quietly removed the pistol from his trembling hand.

"My name is Emma Carter."

She tore off part of her own sleeve and pressed it against his wound.

"You'll bleed to death in ten minutes if you keep talking."

"You don't understand..."

She interrupted him.

"No."

"You don't understand."

"If people are trying this hard to kill you... the hospital is the first place they'll look."

Vincent stared at her.

Nobody...

Not one person...

Had ever spoken to him like that.

No fear.

No respect.

No greed.

Only calm.

She somehow dragged the six-foot-three mafia boss through the back door of an abandoned apartment building where she rented the smallest room on the top floor.

The room barely held one bed.

A tiny stove.

A cracked window.

And shelves full of medical books.

"You studied medicine?"

"I almost became a doctor."

"What happened?"

Emma smiled sadly.

"Life happened."

Without another word she sterilized a kitchen knife over a candle.

Vincent narrowed his eyes.

"What are you doing?"

"You have a bullet inside."

"An ambulance—"

"You won't survive until it arrives."

She handed him an old leather belt.

"Bite."

For the next twenty minutes...

The most powerful criminal in America screamed louder than he ever had.

When it was over...

Emma collapsed onto the floor, exhausted.

The bullet landed beside her.

Vincent stared at the tiny piece of metal.

"You just saved my life."

She shrugged.

"I saved a human being."

Not a mafia boss.

Not a billionaire.

Not a monster.

Just...

A human being.

That single sentence hit Vincent harder than any bullet ever had.

...

Hours later...

Outside the apartment building...

More than fifty black SUVs silently surrounded the neighborhood.

Hundreds of armed men waited.

No one dared enter.

Because their boss had given only one order over the radio before losing consciousness.

"If anyone hurts the girl inside..."

"I'll burn this city to the ground."

Meanwhile...

Emma quietly covered Vincent with her only blanket before sitting beside the window.

May you like

She never noticed the sniper laser slowly appearing on her chest.
