Chapter 28 - THE AFTERMATH IN THE STUDYTwo hours later, the Greenwich estate had returned to a chilling, sterile order.

The federal marshals—summoned by Marco through emergency secure channels—had arrived in a convoy of unmarked black vans to take Vince Sterling and his surviving mercenaries into immediate custody. Sterling had been led out of the mansion in heavy steel handcuffs, his tailored suit wrinkled, his expression a mask of defeated disbelief as he realized his decades-long ambition had evaporated in a matter of minutes.

In the master study, the fire crackled warmly in the hearth.

Roman sat behind his desk, pouring two fingers of aged bourbon into a heavy crystal tumbler. He didn't drink it immediately; he just stared at the amber liquid, watching the firelight refract through the glass.

Elena walked in from the nursery, having just checked on Clara, who had slept through the entire ordeal completely undisturbed. She walked over to the desk, pulled out the chair opposite him, and sat down.

The marshals have Sterling in transit to the federal penitentiary in Manhattan, Elena reported quietly. The U.S. Attorney’s office says his asset-seizure warrants have been nullified by our corporate restructuring filings. He’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Roman looked up across the desk, meeting her gaze. He set the tumbler down without taking a sip.

Three times, Elena, he said, his voice unusually soft. Three times someone has tried to take this house, this life, from us. From you.

She didn't look away. Her dark eyes remained steady, deep, and unyielding.

They don't want the house, Roman, she said. They want what the house represents. They want the throne. For fifty years, the syndicate operated under the belief that power is something you seize by force and hold by fear. They don't understand that true power isn't about the empire you build. It’s about the person you choose to stand beside when the walls come down.

Roman stood up from his desk, walked around the mahogany barrier, and stopped beside her chair. He reached down, taking her hand in his. Her fingers were warm, steady, and completely secure.

I spent nine years thinking I was the protector of this family, Roman murmured, his voice thick with emotion. I was just the guard dog. You were the architect of our survival all along.

May you like

Elena stood up, stepping close to him, her hands resting softly against the lapels of his jacket.

We’re partners, Roman, she corrected gently. Always have been.
