Chapter 9 - THE CULPABILITY OF SILENCEThree weeks later, in a sun-drenched villa overlooking the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, the world felt impossibly far away.

The scandal in New York had exploded across every major news network. Marino Holdings had been completely restructured under federal supervision, cleansed of its illicit ties, and legally transferred into a blind trust bearing a single name: The Elena Trust for Family Welfare.

Sabrina Cross was currently facing fifteen years in a federal penitentiary for corporate espionage and wire fraud, her grand ambitions reduced to a prison jumpsuit and a concrete cell. Viktor Vance was locked in a maximum-security facility awaiting trial, his syndicate completely dismantled by his own brother and a quiet woman from Greenwich.

Roman stood on the stone balcony of the villa, a cup of black coffee in his hand, watching the white-capped waves crash against the cliffs below.

Footsteps echoed softly behind him. Elena walked out onto the balcony, wrapped in a loose linen dress, her hand resting comfortably against her fully rounded stomach. The baby was due in less than a month.

You’re up early, Roman said, wrapping his free arm gently around her waist, pulling her back against his chest.

The doctor said I need to walk more, she replied, leaning back into his embrace with a sigh of quiet contentment. Besides, it’s too quiet inside. I missed the noise.

It’ll get louder soon enough, Roman murmured, pressing a soft kiss against the top of her dark hair.

Elena turned in his arms, looking up into his eyes. There was no fear left between them, no secrets, no hidden agendas. Just the stark, unvarnished reality of two people who had stared into the abyss of their own destruction and chosen each other instead.

Do you ever miss it? she asked softly. The power? The city? The game?

Roman shook his head, tightening his grip around her.

I had the most dangerous player in the world sitting across from me at the breakfast table for nine years, and I was too blind to see it, he said, his voice thick with emotion. I don't need a game anymore. I have everything I ever fought for right here.

Elena smiled, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, powerful beat of his heart.

May you like

Good, she whispered, her eyes twinkling with a familiar, dangerous warmth. Because I’m retired from saving your life. From here on out, you're on your own.

Roman laughed—a deep, resonant sound that carried out over the Mediterranean sea—and held her tighter as the sun crested the horizon, illuminating a future neither of them had ever expected to see.
