Chapter 29 - THE QUIET MORNINGThe sun rose over the Greenwich estate the following morning in a brilliant wash of gold and crimson light, burning away the last lingering mist from the manicured lawns.

Inside the nursery, little Clara was awake, gurgling happily as she batted at a mobile of wooden stars hanging above her crib.

Roman and Elena stood together by the window, watching her play while sipping their morning coffee in companionable silence. The air in the house felt lighter than it had in months—cleaner, sharper, completely purged of the ghosts and shadows that had haunted their marriage since the very beginning.

The phone on the side table buzzed—a quiet, domestic ringtone.

Roman glanced at the screen. It was Marco, calling from the ground-floor security station.

Go ahead, Marco, Roman answered.

All clean, boss, Marco’s voice came through crisp and clear. Federal monitors show zero anomalous traffic across all regional nodes. Sterling’s assets have been completely absorbed by the federal receiver. The estate is legally and operationally secure.

Good, Roman said. Take the rest of the week off, Marco. You earned it.

Copy that, boss. Enjoy the quiet.

Roman hung up the phone, setting it back on the table. He turned back to Elena, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close against his chest.

Quiet, he repeated softly. I could get used to this.

Don't get too comfortable, Elena teased, a playful spark dancing in her dark eyes. Knowing you, you’ll find a new corporate acquisition to obsess over by Tuesday.

May you like

Roman laughed—a deep, resonant sound that carried out across the room and mingled with their daughter's happy gurgles.

No acquisitions, he whispered, pressing his lips gently to her forehead. I already own everything that matters.
