Chapter 15 - The Snowbound Confrontation

The freezing Alpine wind whipped snow across the expansive marble terrace as Claire pushed open the heavy oak doors. The courtyard was bathed in the eerie amber glow of emergency floodlights, casting long, twisted shadows across the fresh white drifts.
Standing twenty paces away, near the grand stone fountain at the center of the courtyard, stood Michael Reed. He wore a heavy black tactical jacket, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his breath pluming into white clouds in the freezing air.
"You came alone. I'm impressed, Counselor," Michael mocked, taking a slow step forward.
"You're a fool, Michael," Claire said, her voice cutting cleanly through the howling wind. "You think you can break into a high-security estate in Switzerland and walk away? The local federal police were alerted the second your signal hit our comms relay."
Michael chuckled, shaking his head. "Let them come. By the time the local gendarmes clear the mountain roads, I'll be halfway across the French border with something much more valuable than money."
He whistled sharply.
From the shadows behind the stone gatehouse, Jax Vance stepped out into the light, holding a terrified, shivering Elena wrapped in a heavy blue blanket.
Claire’s composure shattered instantly. The cold, calculating corporate lawyer vanished, replaced by a mother whose soul had just been ripped violently out of her chest.
"Let her go!" Claire screamed, taking a sharp step forward, her hand instinctively dropping toward the concealed pistol in her waistband.
"Ah ah ah," Michael warned, pulling a small black electronic detonator from his pocket and holding it up where she could see it. "Don't even think about it, Claire. One twitch, and the C4 charges wired to the villa's main generator turn this little winter wonderland into a smoking crater."
Jax gripped Elena tighter, the little girl crying softly into the wool blanket. "Smart girl, Claire. Drop the weapon. Slow and easy."
Claire’s chest heaved. Her mind raced at a thousand miles an hour, calculating angles, distances, wind speed, and reaction times. She knew Michael’s finger was twitching over the detonator. She knew Jax was holding a knife dangerously close to Elena’s small shoulder.
Slowly, deliberately, she slid her hand into her coat, pulled out the Walther PPK by the barrel, and dropped it onto the snow-covered marble at her feet.
"Weapon down," Claire said, her voice trembling slightly, though her eyes blazed with a terrifying, predatory fury. "Now let my daughter go."
"Oh, we're going to let her go, Claire," Michael smiled, taking a step closer, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. "Right after you and I have a little chat about asset redistribution."
Before Michael could take another step, a sharp, deafening crack echoed through the snowy canyon behind them.
Michael’s body violently jerked forward as a high-caliber round tore through his right shoulder, spinning him around and sending the detonator flying out of his hand into the snowdrift.
Jax shouted in shock, dropping the knife and instinctively grabbing Elena as a second crack shattered the frozen air.
From the upper balcony of the villa, half a dozen elite private security operatives—led by Alistair Vance—raised their suppressed assault rifles, training red laser sights directly on Jax's chest.
"Drop the child, Jax," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the shadowed archway behind the courtyard entrance.
