Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the System

"She's a lawyer?" The words felt stupid, heavy, and completely inadequate as they left my lips.

"Not just any lawyer," Michael said, his hand finally resting firmly on the grip of his concealed firearm. "Top of her class at Northwestern, specialized in federal financial crimes and corporate asset forfeiture. She spent the last six years playing the role of the quiet, submissive housewife while she slowly, methodically built an ironclad federal case against you, piece by piece, document by document."

I stared at the screen, the blinking green light mocking me. Every ruthless move I had made over the past decade—every warehouse raid, every smuggled shipment, every tax evasion scheme—was meticulously documented with timestamped audio recordings, digital signatures, and bank transfer slips that even my best forensic accountants couldn't have wiped clean.

She hadn't just packed a suitcase tonight because of another woman. The affair with the starlet was just the final match she threw onto a pyre she had been building for years. She didn't care about the other woman because she was already miles ahead, orchestrating my total, absolute destruction.

"Why?" I growled, taking a step toward Michael. "If she had all this, why stay? Why play the game for six years?"

"Because building a case that can bring down Daniel Carter takes time," a voice echoed from the doorway behind us.

My body locked up.

I whipped around. Standing in the hallway, leaning casually against the doorframe with her coat still buttoned and her hand resting gently over her swollen stomach, was Claire.

She didn't look like a woman fleeing in terror. She looked like a general inspecting the aftermath of a successfully executed siege. Her eyes were completely devoid of the warmth, the affection, or the submission I had taken for granted for the past six years.

"Claire," I whispered, the name catching in my throat. "How are you... you left in a car hours ago."

"I sent an empty car down to the garage to keep you occupied," she said, stepping into the room. She moved with a slow, deliberate grace, her heels clicking against the bare concrete floor. "I had to give Michael enough time to secure the perimeter and make sure your loyal little attack dogs downstairs were neutralized."

Michael gave a sharp nod of acknowledgment to my pregnant wife, stepping away from me and standing directly at her side.

My own security chief. My own right hand. Bought and paid for by the woman I thought needed my protection.

"Michael works for Carter Holdings," I said, a dangerous edge returning to my voice as adrenaline surged through my veins. "And I own Carter Holdings."

"Not anymore, Daniel," Claire said calmly, pulling a folded document from her coat pocket and tossing it onto the desk. "As of midnight, Carter Holdings has been dissolved under federal emergency receivership. Your bank accounts are frozen, your properties are seized, and your warrants are signed. You don't own a desk, a warehouse, or a pair of socks without federal approval."
