Chapter 17 - Echoes in the Indiana Cell

Half a world away, inside the freezing, sterile confines of the Indiana federal penitentiary, I woke up with a violent start.

A cold sweat soaked through my prison-issue jumpsuit. My heart hammered against my ribs as if I had just run a marathon. I sat up on the narrow metal cot, gasping for air in the oppressive dark of the cell.

There was no sound except for the distant, metallic clank of a guard's keys down the corridor and the low, rhythmic hum of the fluorescent overhead lights.

"Just a dream," I muttered to myself, rubbing my face with shaking hands.

But it didn't feel like a dream. It felt like a warning.

For three years, I had convinced myself that Claire was safe in her Swiss fortress, that my punishment was complete, and that the world I had left behind was buried under mountains of legal paperwork and federal indictments. But sitting here in the dark, the phantom scent of Alpine pine and cold snow seemed to linger in the air around me.

The heavy steel door of my cell clanged open.

It wasn't guard shift change. It was 3:00 AM.

Two armed federal marshals stood in the doorway, their faces completely obscured by heavy tactical helmets and night-vision goggles.

"Daniel Carter?" the lead marshal demanded, his voice flat and robotic.

"Yeah," I said slowly, swinging my legs over the side of the cot. "What's going on? It's the middle of the night."

"Get up. You're being transferred," the marshal ordered, stepping into the cell and grabbing my arms with rough, unyielding efficiency.

"Transferred where?" I demanded, planting my feet against the concrete floor. "My sentence is set. I'm assigned to this facility."

"Orders from the federal magistrate," the second marshal said, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto my wrists with a sharp click. "Emergency extradition review under international treaty guidelines."

Before I could ask another question, they hauled me out of the cell, dragging me down the long, echoing concrete corridor toward the facility's subterranean transport bay.

My mind raced. International treaty guidelines? Extradition? There was only one person on the face of the planet who had the legal power, the financial leverage, and the motive to pull me out of an American federal prison in the middle of the night.

Claire.
