Chapter 18 - The Transatlantic Flight

The private Gulfstream jet cut smoothly through the starry night sky high above the Atlantic Ocean.

I sat near the back of the luxurious cabin, shackled to a bolted floor-anchor, wearing a standard orange jumpsuit that looked absurdly out of place against the cream-leather upholstery, mahogany tables, and crystal glassware.

Sitting across from me, sipping a cup of black coffee, was Alistair Vance.

He looked as immaculate as ever, reading a tablet displaying European financial markets as if we were sitting in a high-rise board meeting in Zurich rather than transporting a convicted felon across international airspace.

"You didn't have to put me in leg irons, Alistair," I said, my voice dry and raspy. "Where am I going? Geneva?"

Alistair didn't look up from his tablet for a long moment. Finally, he swiped the screen off, set it down on the mahogany table, and looked at me with his trademark polite, chilling smile.

"Not Geneva, Mr. Carter. A private estate in the Italian countryside, near Lake Como."

I narrowed my eyes. "Why Lake Como? What does Claire want with me now? I signed over the foundation. I gave up everything."

"Madame Vance does not require your assets, Daniel. She has everything she ever wanted," Alistair said smoothly, leaning forward. "Which is precisely why she requested your presence for a very specific, private hearing."

"A hearing about what?"

May you like

"About closure," Alistair replied softly. "You spent twenty years believing you were the master of your own destiny, a king ruling an empire of fear and violence. Claire wants to show you what that empire looks like when it is finally laid to rest."

The jet engines hummed a steady, hypnotic rhythm as the hours ticked away in silence. I stared out the triple-paned window into the vast, endless black of the night sky, wondering what kind of reckoning awaited me at the end of this journey.
