Chapter 2 - The Architect

"Explain," I said, my voice dropping into that low, dangerous register that usually made grown men drop to their knees.

Michael didn’t flinch. He just leaned against the doorframe, a faint, mocking smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He had served me for ten years, taking bullets, burying problems, and managing my logistics. I had trusted him with my life, my secrets, and my blood.

"You thought you built this empire all by yourself, didn't you?" Michael chuckled softly, stepping further into the room. "You thought your ruthless business instincts and your terrifying reputation made Daniel Carter a king. But kings need kingdoms, Daniel. And kingdoms require foundations. Claire poured the concrete for every single brick of yours."

My chest constricted. I thought back to the early days of our marriage, back when we were living in a cramped apartment above a bakery. Claire had been a quiet, brilliant finance major with a mind for numbers that scared me even then. I had told her to quit her job when my first warehouse deal went through, telling her I would take care of everything, that she would never have to look at a ledger again.

She had smiled, kissed my cheek, and said she wanted to be my wife, not my employee.

"She never stopped looking at the ledgers," Michael continued, walking over to the metal desk and picking up a thick manila folder. He tossed it onto the desk surface, letting it slide toward me. "While you were out playing mob boss, breaking jaws and collecting protection money, Claire was sitting right here, cleaning your dirty money, setting up your blind trusts, and systematically buying out every single silent partner you ever crossed."

I grabbed the folder and flipped it open. Page after page of signatures stared back at me. Not my signature—hers. Power of attorney, executed legally, notarized by corrupt officials she had somehow bought off without my knowledge, and countersigned by corporate entities that legally owned eighty percent of Carter Holdings.

"That's impossible," I breathed, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "I would have known. I sign everything."

"You sign what they put in front of you," Michael corrected, his eyes hardening. "When you're too busy sleeping with starlets, drinking expensive scotch, and intimidating low-level thugs, you tend to skip the fine print. Claire didn't need to yell at you or throw wine glasses. She didn't want your apologies. She wanted your crown. And tonight, she finally has the legal paperwork to take it all."

Before I could lunge across the room, the secure laptop on the desk chimed. A high-priority encrypted email popped up on the screen, bearing a single attachment: a court-strained asset freeze notice and a federal grand jury subpoena, addressed directly to Daniel Carter, signed by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

And at the bottom of the legal brief, under Plaintiff Counsel, was a name that made my blood run instantly cold: Claire Carter, Esq.
