Chapter 16 - The Return of the Patriarch

Jax froze, his hands hovering awkwardly over the crying child. He looked up at the red laser dots dancing across his chest, then back at Marcus, who was slowly walking down the stone steps with the cold, measured stride of an executioner.

"Uncle Marcus," Jax stammered, his bravado instantly evaporating into pure panic. "I... I was just following orders. Michael said—"

"Michael is a dead man," Marcus interrupted, his voice cutting through the freezing wind like a razor blade. He raised the rifle barrel, locking his sights directly between Jax's eyes. "And you are standing on private property that doesn't belong to you."

Before Jax could react, Alistair and two security operatives rushed down from the balcony, tackling Jax into the snow and violently pinning his arms behind his back.

Claire didn't wait for them. She sprinted across the freezing marble, dropping to her knees in the snow as Jax released Elena.

"Mommy!" the little girl sobbed, throwing her arms around Claire’s neck and burying her face in her coat.

"I've got you, my sweet girl. I've got you," Claire whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks as she held her daughter tight against her chest, rocking back and forth in the snow. "You're safe. I promise you, you're safe."

Across the courtyard, Michael Reed was groaning in agony, clutching his bleeding shoulder as Alistair kicked his legs out from under him and zip-tied his hands behind his back.

Marcus walked over, standing over Michael’s writhing body. He looked down with profound, unadulterated contempt.

"You always were a sloppy operative, Michael," Marcus said quietly. "You thought you could outsmart the Vesper Foundation because you spent a few years running errands for Daniel Carter. You forgot who built the table you were sitting at."

"Go to hell, Marcus," Michael spat, blood staining the snow beneath his chin.

"I've already been there," Marcus replied coldly, gesturing to Alistair. "Throw them both in the lower vault. Call the Swiss federal prosecutor. Have them extradited to an undisclosed black site before sunrise."

As the security guards hauled Michael and Jax away, leaving dark crimson trails across the pristine white snow, Marcus walked over to Claire, kneeling down beside her in the freezing drifts.

He gently placed a hand on Claire’s shoulder.

"Are you alright, my girl?"

May you like

Claire looked up at her father, taking a shaky, ragged breath as she held Elena safely in her arms. The nightmare was over. The last loose ends of her old life had been permanently severed.

"I'm alright, Dad," Claire whispered, a small, genuine smile breaking through her tears. "We're all alright."
