Chapter 15 - The London Short

The rain over London was relentless, slicking the cobblestones of Mayfair and casting a dreary, gray pallor over the financial district. Chloe sat in a high-end, glass-walled café overlooking Piccadilly Circus, clutching a lukewarm latte between trembling hands. Her designer handbag rested on the chair beside her—filled with maxed-out credit cards, a fading passport, and barely two thousand pounds in cash.
Just a week ago, she was the queen of Brooklyn’s social scene, sleeping with the crown prince of the Casaro syndicate and laughing at a naive mechanic’s daughter. Now, she was a fugitive in exile, hiding from a shadow she couldn't outrun.
Her phone buzzed violently on the marble table.
Chloe jumped, spilling a drop of coffee onto her silk blouse. With shaking fingers, she snatched up the device and unlocked the screen. A breaking financial alert flashed across her brokerage app—a terminal linked to her family’s remaining offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.
Account balance: $0.00.
Chloe gasped, dropping her phone onto the table. She scrambled to pick it up, tapping frantically against the screen. Every single stock, bond, and trust fund bearing her family name had been aggressively shorted, liquidated, and seized by an anonymous institutional shell corporation registered in Delaware under the name Myra Holdings.
“No... no, no, no!” Chloe sobbed aloud, drawing strange, annoyed glances from the nearby patrons. She tried to open her mobile banking app, only to receive a chilling red notification message across the screen:
Access denied. Account frozen by order of the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force and Casaro Global Assets.
Before Chloe could draw another breath, the glass door of the café chimed. Two tall men in dark trench coats walked in, moving with military precision. They didn't look like British police officers; they moved like Brooklyn enforcers.
They stopped right at Chloe’s table. The larger of the two men leaned down, placing a sleek black business card on the marble surface right beside her latte.
The embossed silver lettering on the card read simply: MYRA CASARO – MANAGING DIRECTOR.

“Ms. Casaro sends her regards,” the enforcer said coldly, his voice laced with an unmistakable American accent. “She noted that your coffee looks cold. She suggests you catch the next flight out of Heathrow. Permanently.”
Chloe burst into tears, burying her face in her hands as the patrons of the café watched in silent, uncomfortable shock. The empire she thought she would inherit had been wiped out with a single keystroke across the Atlantic.
