Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Power

The smoke cleared from Pier 44 within twenty minutes. Maroni’s surviving men were zip-tied and loaded into the back of transport vans, destined for an interrogation facility three stories beneath the Casaro estate. Maroni himself was bleeding heavily, kneeling in the dirt before Leo and Myra like a broken dog.
“You’re dead,” Maroni wheezed, spitting blood onto the concrete. “The commission in New Jersey... they won't let a civilian woman take control of the East Coast routes. The syndicate will tear you apart.”
Leo stepped forward, his face an impassioned mask of absolute authority. He grabbed Maroni by the collar of his expensive suit, hoisting him up with terrifying physical strength.
“The commission answers to whoever holds the debt ledgers and the blood contracts,” Leo said quietly, his voice like grinding stones. “And right now? Myra holds both.”
Maroni’s eyes widened in sheer horror as he looked at Myra. He finally understood the terrifying truth: the Casaro empire wasn't falling apart; it was being reborn in fire.
“Take him away,” Leo commanded. Two massive capos stepped forward, dragging Maroni screaming into the darkness of the warehouse.
The dock grew quiet again, save for the rhythmic crashing of the river against the concrete pylons.
Myra exhaled slowly, lowering her pistol and engaging the safety. Her hands were steady, but beneath the adrenaline, her muscles ached with the exhaustion of a thousand shattered illusions. Everything she had known twenty-four hours ago was gone. Her old life, her innocent dreams, her naive trust—all burned away like ash in the wind.
Leo turned to look at her, his dark eyes softening by a fraction as he reached out and gently touched her shoulder.
“You handled yourself like a veteran,” Leo said, his voice unusually gentle. “Are you regretting it yet? Are you wishing you had just stayed in your apartment, far away from all of this blood and betrayal?”
Myra looked up at him, meeting his intense gaze without flinching. She stepped closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest.
“Nico taught me that the world belongs to the predators, Leo,” she said softly, her fingers lightly tracing the lapel of his coat. “And you taught me how to bare my teeth. Why would I ever want to go back to being prey?”
Leo stared down at her, a fierce, undeniable hunger flaring deep within his dark eyes. The lines separating mentor and partner, boss and soldier, instantly dissolved into nothingness.

Before either of them could speak, a distant siren wailed in the streets of Brooklyn, signaling the arrival of the local authorities—authorities who were already safely on the Casaro payroll.
“Come on, Myra,” Leo murmured, offering her his arm. “Let’s go home and claim our empire.”
