Chapter 6 - THE REIGN OF THE EMPIRE (THE END)

"Mom?" Amara’s voice cracked, the cool facade completely shattering. "You're alive?"
Evelyn Bello smiled, but there was no maternal warmth in her eyes. It was the smile of a predator. "Of course I am, sweetheart. You don't honestly think a petty car crash could take out a Bello, do you? I faked my death to go underground and finish what your father started."
"You stole the data," Alexander said, his hand slowly moving toward his holster. "You used your own daughter as a decoy to make me think the vault was still secure."
"Don't move, Alexander," Evelyn warned, raising the detonator. "The whole place is rigged with C4. If I press this, the ocean collapses into this tunnel. And yes, I used Amara. Who do you think leaked her father's debts to your syndicates? I needed you to bring her here. I needed your resources to clear out the Vales, who were sniffing around my territory."
Evelyn looked at Amara. "He’s not protecting you, Amara. Tell her, Alexander. Tell her who really ordered the hit on your father twenty years ago."
Amara looked between her mother and her husband. "Alexander... what is she talking about?"
Alexander closed his eyes for a brief moment. When he opened them, they were filled with a dark, tragic resignation. "My father wasn't betrayed by yours, Amara. My father was the tyrant. He was going to slaughter the entire Bello family to take total control. Your father acted in self-defense. I knew the truth. I didn't marry you for revenge against your father. I married you to atone for mine."
Evelyn laughed harshly. "A touching story. Too bad nobody will live to write it. The data is already uploaded to my private servers. The world’s cartels now answer to me."
"Not quite," Amara said.
The entire room went quiet. Evelyn blinked. "What?"
Amara pulled her phone from her pocket. The screen was glowing. "Before we came down here, I didn't trust Alexander. So I linked my phone to his network—the one he used to short-sell the Vale Group. When the vault scanner read my DNA, it didn't just authorize access. It triggered a mirroring protocol I set up in the Maybach."
Amara smiled, a cold, sharp expression that mirrored her husband's. "The data didn't go to your servers, Mother. It went to a public, encrypted whistleblower network. By now, every federal agency in the world has the files. The cartels are finished. Your leverage is gone."
Evelyn’s face distorted with rage. "You stupid girl—"
She lunged to press the detonator, but Alexander was faster. Two silenced shots echoed through the tunnel. Evelyn dropped the detonator, clutching her shoulder as she collapsed to the ground, neutralized but alive.
"The tunnel is flooding!" Lucius shouted through Alexander’s earpiece as water began pouring through the cracked ceiling.
Alexander grabbed Amara’s hand. "We have to go. Now!"
They ran through the rising water, his grip on her hand tighter than it had ever been. They burst through the surface into the gray dawn just as the ground beneath the old docks caved in, swallowing the secret vault forever.
One Month LaterThe rooftop of the newly rebranded Park International Hotel was quiet. The pool where the drama had begun was still glittering under the night sky, but Sterling Vale was gone, serving a life sentence for attempted murder and financial fraud. Evelyn Bello was locked away in a federal black site.
Amara stood at the edge, wearing a new gold silk gown. She wasn't holding a glass of champagne. She was looking at the city skyline.
A heavy jacket was gently placed over her shoulders. She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
"Are you going to leave me?" Alexander asked quietly, standing beside her. "The debt is paid. The secrets are out. You are completely free."
Amara turned to look at the silent mafia CEO who had bought an empire just to avenge a splash of water. She reached up, took his tie, and pulled him slightly closer.

"And miss the chance to see what empire we buy next?" she whispered.
Alexander’s lips curved into a rare, breathtaking smile. He leaned down, and under the flashing lights of a city they now completely owned, he kissed his queen.
