Chapter 3 - THE HOSTILE TAKEOVER

The sun rose over the city, painting the glass facade of the Vale Headquarters in shades of blood orange. The lobby was chaos. Hundreds of reporters packed the marble hall, their microphones thrust forward like weapons.

Amara stood in the green room, now dressed in a flawless white power suit. Her wet braids had been dried and styled into a sleek, commanding crown. Outwardly, she looked like an empress. Inwardly, the paper note in her pocket was burning a hole through her soul.

“She is the key to the vault.” What vault? What did her family have that a mafia kingpin wanted so badly?

The door burst open. It wasn't Alexander.

It was Sterling Vale. His hair was disheveled, his tuxedo shirt unbuttoned at the collar, and his eyes were bloodshot. In his right hand, he held a sleek black pistol.

"You bitch," Sterling hissed, locking the heavy oak door behind him. He pointed the gun directly at Amara’s chest. "You and your husband ruined me. My father had a heart attack an hour ago. I am broke. The banks seized my penthouse."

Amara didn't flinch. The coldness she had learned from living with Alexander kicked in. "You shoved me into a pool because I refused to sell you my family's old shipping docks, Sterling. You did this to yourself."

"Those docks are worth billions, and you know it!" Sterling screamed, his hand shaking. "There's something hidden underneath them. Why else would Park ruin me to get them? He’s using you!"

"I know he's using me," Amara said, her voice dropping to a dangerously calm whisper, channeling the very man she was furious with. "But at least he's smart enough to do it without holding a gun in a room full of federal agents and journalists."

"I don't care anymore!" Sterling yelled, taking a step forward. "If I'm going down, I'm taking Park's prized possession with me."

The lock on the door didn't click; it shattered.

The heavy wood split in half as Alexander stepped into the room. He didn't have a weapon in his hand. He didn't need one. His aura alone was suffocating. Behind him stood six heavily armed men in tactical gear.

"Sterling," Alexander said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "You have exactly three seconds to lower that weapon before I let my men find out how many pieces a human body can be broken into."
