Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT LIQUIDATION

Inside the leather-scented sanctuary of the Maybach, the silence was suffocating. Amara clutched Alexander’s jacket around herself, watching the city lights blur past the window.
"Why did you do it?" she asked softly. "You hate public scenes."
Alexander was on his tablet, his fingers flying across the screen. "He touched what is mine. In my world, that is a death sentence. In his world, losing his money is worse than dying."
Amara felt a flutter in her chest. For three years, their marriage had been a cold, calculated arrangement. Her father had owed a debt; Alexander had needed a respectable wife to front his legitimate corporate expansions. They slept in separate bedrooms. They spoke in polite, measured sentences. But tonight, seeing him cross that rooftop felt like a awakening.
Suddenly, Alexander’s phone buzzed. It was his chief financial officer, Lucius. Alexander put it on speaker.
"It's done, boss," Lucius said, his voice crackling through the high-end speakers. "We initiated the short-squeeze. We bought out their primary debtors three minutes ago. The Vale Group is defaulting on their landmark downtown project. By 6:00 AM, the board will have no choice but to vote Sterling out and accept our hostile takeover."
"Good," Alexander said coldly. "Buy it all. The hotels, the casinos, the residential towers. Leave him nothing but the clothes he wore tonight."
"And his father?" Lucius asked.
"Tell the old man his son paid for a very expensive swim." Alexander hung up.
Amara stared at her husband. "You destroyed a dynasty in twenty minutes."
"They were weak," Alexander said, finally looking at her. His dark eyes softened for a fraction of a second. "Go change. We have a press conference at dawn."
As Alexander stepped out of the car to take another call, Amara leaned forward to pick up her fallen evening bag. Her hand brushed against a thick, manila folder hidden under the passenger seat. It was stamped with a red seal: CLASSIFIED - BELLO ENTERPRISES.
Curiosity piqued, she opened it. Inside was a document dated four years ago—a year before she met Alexander. It was an asset liquidation plan for her own family's company, signed by Alexander Park. But what caught her breath was a sticky note attached to the front in Alexander’s handwriting:

“Target Amara Bello. Use the father’s debt to secure the asset. She is the key to the vault.”
Amara’s heart stopped. He hadn't married her to save her father. He had engineered her father's ruin to trap her.
