Chapter 1 - THE WILL OF THE LIVING DEAD

The billionaire woke up to a cured heart, but a house full of vultures ready to pick him clean. The medical bay inside the Whitmore mansion smelled of sterile alcohol and expensive wood. Dr. Robert Vance, Joseph’s personal physician for two decades, stared at the monitor with a furrowed brow.
"Her fever has finally broken," Dr. Vance whispered, nodding toward the small bed where Emily lay sleeping, a nasal cannula delivering oxygen to her tiny lungs. "But Joseph, you... you were minutes away from an irreversible hypoxic brain injury. If that child hadn't pressed that inhaler into your mouth..."
Joseph sat in the armchair beside Emily’s bed, his face a mask of pale stone. For the first time in five years, the suffocating fog of grief in his mind had cleared, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity. He looked at Alicia, who was sitting on a stool in the corner, her hands trembling, her eyes red from crying. She was terrified—not just of him, but of the world outside these gates that had almost crushed her.
"Alicia," Joseph said, his voice raspy but commanding.
She flinched. "Yes, Mr. Whitmore? I can pack our things immediately. I know I violated your rules—"
"Silence," Joseph said gently. It wasn't the harsh snap he usually gave his executives. It was a plea for quiet. "You are not leaving. From this day forward, your duties as a maid are terminated. You are now the Estate Administrator. Your salary is quadrupled. And Emily..." He looked at the little girl with the yellow beads in her braids. "Emily will have the best tutors, the best doctors, and the key to any room in this house."
Alicia gasped, covering her mouth as tears spilled over.
But peace never lasted long in the Whitmore empire. Outside the heavy oak doors, footsteps hurried down the corridor. The door burst open, revealing Julian Whitmore—Joseph’s younger, estranged brother—and Victoria, Joseph’s ambitious sister-in-law. They didn't look relieved; they looked panicked.
"Joseph!" Julian gasped, breathing heavily. "We heard you collapsed! Thank God you're alright. The board members are frantic. Stocks are fluctuating."
Victoria’s sharp eyes bypassed Joseph completely, landing straight on Emily and Alicia. Her lips curled into a sneer. "What is this? Why is a servant’s brat occupying the private medical wing? Joseph, your judgment is clearly impaired. This is highly unsanitary."
"This 'brat' saved my life, Victoria," Joseph said, his voice dropping an octave, turning freezing cold. "While you two were likely calculating the inheritance tax on my estate."
Julian’s face flushed. "That’s unfair, brother! We care about you. In fact, given your recent... mental fragility and this physical scare, the family council believes it's time you sign the temporary Power of Attorney over to me. Just until you recover."
Julian pulled a document from his leather briefcase. Joseph didn't even look at it. He saw right through them. For five years, they had prayed for his death so they could inherit Whitmore Enterprises, a multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate.
"Get out," Joseph said calmly.
"Joseph, be reasonable—"
"GET OUT!" Joseph roared, the sudden power in his voice echoing off the walls.
Julian and Victoria backed away, but as Victoria passed Alicia, she leaned in and hissed under her breath, "Enjoy this while it lasts, rat. You and your bastard child don't belong here. I will make sure you both end up back in the gutter."
As the doors slammed shut, Joseph looked at the document Julian had left on the table. But his eyes didn't fixate on the Power of Attorney. They caught on a piece of paper sticking out from Julian's briefcase pocket—a confidential medical report with his own name on it.
Joseph stood up, pulled the paper out, and read it. His heart stopped.
The report wasn't about his asthma. It was an advanced toxicology report from an independent lab, dated two weeks ago.

Someone had been secretly switching his inhaler medication with a rare, undetectable respiratory depressant.
THE HOOK: Joseph hadn't just suffered a random asthma attack. He was being systematically murdered by his own bloodline—and the maid’s toddler had accidentally foiled a multi-billion-dollar assassination plot.
