Chapter 2 - THE VIPER IN THE ATTIC

They thought she was a helpless maid. They didn't know she carried a secret that could burn their empire to the ground.Three weeks passed. The mansion underwent a dramatic transformation. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn back, letting the sunlight flood the marble floors. Emily’s laughter echoed through the grand halls as she chased a golden retriever puppy Joseph had bought for her. To the staff, it felt like a miracle. To Julian and Victoria, it was a declaration of war.

Alicia moved into a beautiful guest suite on the second floor. She was no longer wearing a uniform, but she still felt the crushing weight of paranoia. She knew Victoria was watching her every move.

One evening, while Joseph was away at a mandatory board meeting to secure his chairmanship, Alicia was putting Emily to bed.

"Mommy," Emily whispered, hugging her teddy bear. "The mean lady with the loud shoes was in Mr. Joseph’s office today. She was putting white sugar into his little medicine bottles."

Alicia’s blood ran cold. "What did you say, baby?"

"The loud-shoe lady. She told me if I told anyone, she would throw my puppy into the river."

Alicia’s heart hammered against her ribs. Victoria was poisoning him. She had to get evidence.

Waiting until the clock struck midnight and the mansion fell silent, Alicia crept out of her room. She bypassed the security cameras—knowing their blind spots from her years of cleaning them. She slipped into Joseph’s grand study.

The room was dark, illuminated only by the moonlight filtering through the high windows. Alicia approached the mahogany desk. She began searching the drawers, her hands shaking. She found nothing but financial files.

Then, she noticed the floorboard near the built-in bookshelf. It was slightly misaligned. She knelt down, using a letter opener to pry it open. Hidden beneath the wood was a small, velvet-lined box.

Inside wasn't poison. It was a collection of old diaries belonging to Joseph’s late wife, Evelyn, who had died in the plane crash five years ago.

Alicia opened the final diary. The entries from the weeks leading up to the crash made her gasp.

“Joseph thinks the business deal in London is a coincidence, but Julian insisted he stay behind to sign the contract. I feel uneasy about this flight. Julian has been acting strange, asking too many questions about the aircraft's private maintenance logs...”

Alicia’s breath hitched. The plane crash wasn't an accident. Julian had sabotaged the plane to kill Joseph, his wife, and his children all at once. But Joseph had missed the flight, surviving by pure chance.

Suddenly, the lights in the study snapped on.

"Curiosity killed the cat, little maid," a venomous voice purred.

Alicia spun around. Victoria stood in the doorway, a cruel smirk on her face, flanked by Marcus, the mansion’s chief of security, who was holding a suppressed pistol.

THE HOOK: Alicia had just uncovered the ultimate truth behind the Whitmore family tragedy, but she was now trapped in a dark room with a loaded gun pointed at her chest.
