Chapter 3 - BLOOD ON THE MARBLE

A mother’s instinct is more dangerous than a killer’s bullet."Give me the diary, Alicia," Victoria commanded, stepping into the room, her high heels clicking loudly against the hardwood floor. "You really thought you could play Cinderella? You're nothing but trash. And trash gets thrown out."

Alicia clutched the diary to her chest, backing away toward the heavy glass windows. "You killed them. You and Julian killed Joseph’s children. And now you're poisoning him!"

Victoria laughed, a chilling, aristocratic sound. "Joseph was supposed to die five years ago. He ruined our plans by being a workaholic. But his luck runs out tonight. Marcus, make it look like a robbery gone wrong. The maid caught the thief, and unfortunately... she didn't survive."

Marcus raised the silenced pistol, aiming directly at Alicia’s forehead.

Alicia’s mind raced. If she died here, Emily would be left unprotected. The thought of Victoria getting her hands on her daughter ignited something feral inside her.

Just as Marcus squeezed the trigger, Alicia threw the heavy velvet-lined box at his face.

Thwack!

The gun fired, the bullet shattering a priceless vase behind Alicia. Marcus stumbled back, blood pouring from his nose where the box had struck him.

Alicia didn't waste a second. She lunged forward, grabbing the heavy brass desk lamp and swinging it with all her might into Victoria’s shins. Victoria shrieked, collapsing to the floor in a heap of designer clothing.

Alicia bolted out of the study and sprinted down the dark hallway toward the guest wing. "Emily! Emily, wake up!" she screamed.

She burst into Emily’s bedroom, scooped the sleeping toddler into her arms, and ran toward the service staircase. Behind her, she could hear Marcus’s heavy footsteps gaining ground.

"Stop her! Don't let her leave the grounds!" Victoria yelled from the main hall.

Alicia made it to the kitchen, her lungs burning. She could see the back exit just twenty yards away. But suddenly, the door swung open. Julian Whitmore stood there, blocking her path, a sinister smile on his face.

"Going somewhere, darling?" Julian sneered, reaching out to grab Emily.

"Get away from her!" Alicia shrieked.

With nowhere left to run, Alicia grabbed a pot of boiling water left on the stove's simmer ring from the evening tea preparation and flung it directly into Julian’s face.

Julian screamed in agony, clutching his blistering skin and dropping to his knees. Alicia bypassed him, kicked open the back door, and ran out into the pouring rain, holding her daughter tight against her chest.
