Chapter 2 - The Veneer Cracks"Officer," Ryan’s voice was dangerously low, vibrating with a lethal intensity that made even veteran cop Vance step back half a step. "My son cannot breathe, and my mother’s private drawer contains pre-signed custody papers and fabricated medical files. Arrest her."

Evelyn’s eyes flashed with genuine shock for the first time in decades. The untouchable matriarch, the queen of high society, actually stepped back, her manicured fingers twitching against her skirt.

"You are making a monumental mistake, Ryan," Evelyn hissed, her voice cutting through the nursery like broken glass. "You are throwing away your family’s legacy, your reputation, and your sanity for a woman who is currently bleeding on the floor. Do you have any idea what happens to men like you when the Whitmore name is dragged through the mud?"

"I don't give a damn about the Whitmore name anymore," Ryan roared, turning away from her to drop to his knees beside Maya and Oliver.

He scooped his burning, wheezing son into his arms, the boy’s light frame frighteningly limp. "Maya, hold on. We're going. Officer Vance, secure her. If she moves an inch, charge her with attempted endangerment and obstruction of justice."

"Ryan! You will regret this before the night is over!" Evelyn snapped as Officer Vance stepped in front of her, the metallic click of handcuffs sounding like a death knell for her pristine empire.

As Ryan burst through the front door carrying Oliver, with Maya stumbling blindly behind them, Evelyn didn't scream or cry. Instead, as the heavy oak door slammed shut, a terrifying, humorless smile touched the corners of her lips. She looked at Officer Vance with absolute disdain.

"You think a pair of cuffs changes the game, Officer?" she whispered, her eyes dead and calculating. "My son thinks he’s escaping a trap. He has no idea that the real cage was built thirty years ago."
