CHAPTER 3: The Ghost in the Lobby

I changed into the simple silk slip dress and trench coat I had brought for the post-wedding brunch, threw my personal belongings into a duffel bag, and exited the bridal suite through the service elevator. I couldn't face the ballroom again, nor the vultures waiting in the main hallways.

The hotel's secondary lobby was dim, quiet, and smelled of expensive leather and polished wood. It was reserved for VIP guests checking into the private residences. I stood near a massive marble pillar, scanning the room, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"You look remarkably composed for a woman who just canceled a ten-million-dollar wedding," a deep, calm voice said from behind me.

I spun around. Standing in the shadow of a large palm tree was a man in a flawlessly tailored charcoal suit. He was tall, with dark hair silvered slightly at the temples, and piercing grey eyes that seemed to read everything about me in a fraction of a second.

Julian Vance.

My breath caught. Julian Vance was the Thompsons’ fiercest rival. He was a self-made billionaire real estate mogul who had spent the last decade systematically dismantling the Thompsons' monopoly on Manhattan luxury housing. Eleanor hated him with a passion that bordered on obsession.

"Mr. Vance," I said, tightening the belt of my trench coat. "Did you send that email?"

"I did," Julian said, stepping into the light. He carried himself with an effortless authority that made Michael look like a boy playing dress-up. "And let me be the first to commend you. The look on Eleanor’s face when you dropped that microphone was worth every penny of the catering bill she’s currently refusing to pay."

"If you're here to gloat, or to use my humiliation as ammunition for your corporate wars, you can leave," I said coldly, turning to walk away. "I’m tired, Mr. Vance. I’ve lost enough today."

"You haven't lost anything, Chloe. You escaped," Julian said, his voice dropping to a serious, grounded tone that stopped me in my tracks. "But Eleanor Thompson doesn't let people escape. Right now, her PR team is fabricating a narrative. By tomorrow morning, the headlines will say you were caught attempting to steal family secrets, or that you were mentally unstable. They will destroy your reputation to protect their stock price."

I swallowed hard. I knew he was right. Eleanor wouldn't just sit back and take the public embarrassment. She would crush me to salvage her family's name.

"Why do you care?" I asked, turning back to him.

Julian stepped closer, his grey eyes locked onto mine. "Because Michael didn't just visit Victoria last night to cheat on you. He went there because Victoria’s father owns the swing votes on the Thompson Global board. Eleanor is trying to force a merger that would effectively bankrupt my primary development project. Michael’s marriage to you was a liability to Eleanor because your father’s logistics company holds the shipping rights to the steel they need for that merger."

I stared at him, the horror dawning on me. "My father... my family's business..."

"Yes," Julian said grimly. "The prenuptial agreement wasn't just to keep you from getting their money. It contained a clause—one you probably didn't reach—that signed over your family's logistics distribution rights to Thompson Global upon the signing of the marriage certificate. Eleanor was using you as a Trojan horse to strip your own father of his life's work."

My blood turned to pure fire. The humiliation was gone, replaced by a raging, burning fury. They weren't just trying to break my heart. They were trying to destroy my family.

"What do we do?" I whispered, the words coming out sharp and deadly.

Julian smiled, a slow, dangerous expression. "We don't get mad, Chloe. We get even. I have the resources. You have the intimate knowledge of their inner circle. Let’s bring down the Thompson empire together."
