CHAPTER 7: The Collapse

The aftermath was glorious and swift.
Within minutes of the revelation, the gala dissolved into chaos. Federal agents, who had been briefed by Julian’s legal team hours prior, arrived at the Plaza Hotel. They didn't care about the high-society dress code; they walked right up to the stage and escorted Eleanor Thompson and her chief financial officer out through the lobby in handcuffs.
The press followed them out, shouting questions, their flashes illuminating Eleanor’s face, which was now twisted in a mask of pure terror and humiliation. The woman who had tried to publicly humiliate me at the altar was now having her own public downfall broadcast live on every major news network in the country.
Michael was left standing on the empty stage. Victoria had already fled, her father dragging her away to salvage whatever was left of their own family reputation.
Slowly, Michael stepped down from the stage, walking through the empty tables toward where Julian and I stood. He looked ten years older, his tuxedo disheveled, his eyes hollow.
"Chloe," he whispered, his voice trembling. "You did this. You destroyed my family."
"No, Michael," I said, my voice calm, steady, and entirely free of malice. "Your mother destroyed your family. Her greed, her arrogance, and her cruelty did this. You just stood by and let her do it because you were too cowardly to ever stand up for what was right."
"I have nothing now," Michael said, a tear finally escaping his eye. "The bank will foreclose on everything. The company is going to file for bankruptcy. The ten condos... everything is gone. I’m ruined."
"You have exactly what you deserved, Michael," I said, stepping closer to him, looking at the man I had loved for three years, feeling absolutely nothing but relief that I was no longer tied to him. "You wanted me to sign a contract where I walked away with nothing. You wanted me to have no home, no assets, not one protected dollar. Now, look at you. You’re the one walking away with nothing."
He reached out, his hand shaking, trying to touch my face. "Chloe... please... I still love you. We can fix this. We can start over, away from my mother—"
May you like
Julian stepped forward, his tall frame cutting off Michael’s path, his gaze icy and unyielding. "I think you’ve said enough, Thompson. Security is waiting to escort you out of the building. Don't ever come near Chloe again."
Michael looked at Julian, then at me, realizing with absolute certainty that he had lost everything. He turned around and walked out of the ballroom, entirely alone.
