CHAPTER 8: A New Future

Three months later, the morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my brand-new corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan.
The Thompson Global empire was gone, its assets liquidated and sold off to cover the massive fines and bank debts. Eleanor Thompson was currently awaiting trial at a federal facility, her high-society friends having completely abandoned her. Michael had relocated to a small town upstate, living off a modest salary from a low-level desk job, completely erased from the New York social register.
My father’s logistics company hadn't just survived; it had thrived. With Julian’s partnership, we had acquired the core shipping contracts previously held by the Thompsons, doubling our business size in a matter of weeks.
I stood at the window, holding a warm cup of coffee, looking out over the city skyline.
A knock sounded at my door, and Julian Vance walked in. He wasn't wearing his usual formal suit today—just a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking relaxed and incredibly handsome.
"You look deep in thought," Julian said, walking over to stand beside me at the window.
"Just thinking about how much can change in a few months," I said, smiling up at him. "A few months ago, I was standing in a wedding dress, thinking my life was over."
"And now?" Julian asked, his grey eyes softening as he looked down at me.
"And now, I realize it was just beginning," I said softly.
Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black velvet box. My heart skipped a beat. He opened it, revealing a stunning, simple emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the morning light beautifully.
"I know you’ve been through a storm, Chloe," Julian said, his voice deep and sincere. "And I know you swore you'd never let anyone control your future again. I don't want to control you. I want to build a future with you. As equals. As partners."
He smiled, a touch of wit in his eyes. "And I promise you two things: first, there will be no prenuptial agreements brought out by my mother. And second, if you say yes, we’re eloping on a beach with absolutely zero witnesses."
I laughed, the sound bright and full of a joy I hadn't felt in years. I reached out, my fingers sliding into his, feeling the warmth and the absolute safety of a man who was brave enough to love me correctly.
May you like
"Yes," I whispered, stepping into his arms. "Absolutely, yes."
The past was gone, the debts were paid, and for the first time in my life, the future belonged entirely to me.
