CHAPTER 4: The War Rooms

Forty-eight hours later, the media storm hit exactly as Julian had predicted.

I sat in the sleek, minimalist conference room of Vance Enterprises, staring at the tablet open on the glass table. The headline on the front page of a major New York gossip column read: RUNAWAY BRIDE OR SCHEMING CON ARTIST? Inside the Unraveling of the Thompson Wedding.

The article, cited from "sources close to the family," claimed that I had demanded a multi-million dollar payout mere moments before the wedding, and when the family refused, I staged a dramatic exit to blackmail them. The video of me signing the agreement and holding the microphone had been heavily edited and circulated online, making me look erratic and hostile.

My phone had been ringing non-stop. Friends I had known for years were suddenly distant or asking probing questions. My father’s business was already receiving calls from clients threatening to pull out due to the negative press.

"Don't read it," Julian said, walking into the room and placing a steaming mug of coffee in front of me. "It's exactly what they want. They want you isolated, frightened, and ready to sign a non-disclosure agreement just to make it stop."

"It's working," I admitted, rubbing my tired eyes. "My dad is stressed. His blood pressure is through the roof. If he loses the shipping contracts, the company will go under in six months."

"He won't lose them," Julian said firmly, sitting across from me. He opened a thick leather binder. "Because we are going to strike back where Eleanor hurts most. Her wallet."

Julian slid a document across the table. It was a breakdown of Thompson Global’s upcoming development project in Hudson Yards—the very project they needed my father’s logistics company for, and the one they were relying on the merger with Victoria’s family to fund.

"Eleanor has overleveraged the company," Julian explained, pointing to a series of financial figures. "She used their Manhattan condominium holdings—the exact ten luxury apartments listed in your prenup—as collateral to secure a massive loan from an international bank. But here's the catch: those apartments aren't legally fully owned by the Thompson estate yet. There is an ongoing dispute regarding the land rights, a dispute that my legal team has been quietly keeping alive."

I looked up, a sudden realization hitting me. "The prenup... the reason she specifically listed those ten luxury apartments and stated I had no claim to them..."

"Was because if you married Michael, and the land dispute went public, your father's company would have been legally tied to the liability," Julian finished. "She was setting up your family to take the fall if the project collapsed. She was going to dump the toxic assets onto your father's balance sheet."

I stared at the paperwork, disgust washing over me. "She is a monster."

"She is a shrewd businesswoman who has never faced a consequence in her life," Julian corrected. "But she made one fatal mistake. She assumed you would be a quiet victim."

Julian leaned forward, his eyes intense. "Tomorrow night is the annual Founders' Gala. The entire elite of New York will be there. The Thompson merger with Victoria’s family is scheduled to be announced on stage. I have an invitation for you as my guest."

I looked at the invitation, its gold lettering gleaming under the conference room lights. Going there meant walking directly into the lion's den. It meant facing Eleanor, Michael, and the entire society that had just branded me a gold digger.

"Are you ready to show them what happens when you corner the wrong woman?" Julian asked.

I reached out and picked up the invitation. "Tell me what I need to wear."
