CHAPTER 6: The Trap Snaps Shut

"Ladies and gentlemen," the booming voice of the master of ceremonies echoed through the ballroom. "Please direct your attention to the main stage for a historic announcement from Thompson Global and the Sterling Group."
The crowd migrated toward the stage. Eleanor, Michael, and Victoria ascended the stairs, bathed in the warm glow of the spotlights. A large digital screen behind them displayed the logos of both companies, ready to merge into a multi-billion dollar monopoly.
Eleanor took the microphone, her public persona instantly snapping back into place. She was radiant, powerful, and utterly in control.
"Thank you all for being here tonight," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with prestige. "Tonight, we don't just celebrate the union of two great corporate families. We celebrate the future of New York real estate. With the finalization of the Hudson Yards expansion, Thompson Global will cement its legacy for generations to come."
Applause filled the room. Michael and Victoria smiled for the flashing cameras of the press corps.
"And now," Eleanor said triumphantly, "I invite my son, Michael Thompson, and Victoria Sterling to sign the definitive merger agreement."
A legal assistant brought out a leather folder, placing it on the podium. Michael reached for the pen.
Suddenly, the massive digital screen behind them flickered. The corporate logos vanished, replaced by a glaring, high-definition image of a financial spreadsheet labeled: THOMPSON GLOBAL: FRAUDULENT COLLATERAL & HUDSON YARDS DEBT REPORT.
A collective murmur broke out among the hundreds of investors and journalists in the crowd.
"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor snapped, turning around to look at the screen, her composure cracking instantly. "Turn that off! Technical difficulties, ladies and gentlemen, please ignore—"
But the screen changed again. This time, it played a crystal-clear audio recording. It was Eleanor’s voice, recorded just three days ago in her private office, talking to her chief financial officer.
"...I don't care if the land titles for the ten Manhattan condos are disputed. List them as fully cleared assets on the bank application. Once the merger with Sterling goes through, we'll use their liquidity to cover the fraud. And if the bank catches on before then, we'll shift the liability to the logistics provider, Chloe’s family. They'll take the fall, and we'll walk away clean."
The ballroom went dead silent. The press cameras, which had been focused on the merger, suddenly turned their lenses toward Eleanor, their flashes firing in rapid succession.
Victoria’s father, the head of the Sterling Group, stared at the screen in absolute horror. He turned to Eleanor, his face dark with fury. "Eleanor... what the hell is this? You lied to us about your liabilities? You were using my daughter's inheritance to cover up bank fraud?"
"Arthur, no! It's a fabrication! It's a deep fake generated by Julian Vance!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking as she pointed wildly into the crowd at Julian and me.
May you like
But it was too late. Julian’s legal team had already filed the documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the New York District Attorney's office exactly five minutes before the presentation began.
Michael stood frozen on the stage, the pen still in his hand, looking down at the crowd, completely destroyed. His mother's empire, his inheritance, his entire future—shattered in a matter of seconds.
