Chapter 4 - THE QUEEN'S TABLEThirty-six hours later, the dynamics of high-society had shifted on a tectonic level.

I sat at the mahogany conference table on the top floor of the Vance-Global Tower, overlooking the glittering skyline of the financial district. Dressed in a bespoke charcoal-grey power suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless chignon, I looked less like the broken housewife of two days ago and more like the corporate empress I was always destined to be.
Across the table sat Richard’s primary business partners, alongside the board of directors of Sterling Holdings. Every single one of them looked exhausted, terrified, and desperate. They had tried to open their offices that morning only to find federal freeze notices plastered across the glass doors.
"Mrs. Sterling—Elena," the chairman of the board, an aging billionaire named Arthur Pendelton, began with a trembling voice, sliding a sleek gold pen across the table. "There has clearly been a catastrophic misunderstanding. We had no idea Richard was mishandling corporate funds or behaving with such... utter disregard for your family."
I didn't touch the pen. I folded my hands on the table, my gaze sweeping across the boardroom with absolute authority.
"Save the performance, Arthur," I said smoothly. "You all knew. You looked the other way while Richard cooked the books because your quarterly dividends were padded by illegal write-offs. You thought you were untouchable."
Richard sat at the far end of the table, shoved into a cheap plastic chair, stripped of his chairman title and his voting shares. He looked defeated, his suit rumpled, his hair unkempt. He hadn't slept a wink.
"Elena, please," Richard whispered, his voice cracking with humiliation as the other board members glared at him. "Just talk to me. Drop the criminal charges. We can settle this privately. We have a history—"
"Our history was a transaction where I gave loyalty and you gave betrayal," I cut him off sharply, not even sparing him a glance. "The board has exactly ten minutes to vote on a complete restructuring of Sterling Holdings. Option one: you sign over 51% controlling voting shares to my private equity firm, and I allow the company to restructure under my direct supervision, keeping most of you out of federal prison."
I paused, letting the silence stretch before delivering the final blow.

"Option two: I let Marcus release the unredacted federal wire fraud package to the Department of Justice, and you can all spend the next twenty years discussing corporate governance in a federal penitentiary."
Arthur Pendelton didn't hesitate. He grabbed the gold pen with shaking hands, pulled the contract toward him, and signed his name at the bottom without reading another word.
